Army of Darkness, LocoMotion Take USNE, CMRA Endurance Victories at Hallett Motor Racing Circuit

The Army of Darkness team rode their Michelin-shod BMW S1000RR “Brunhilde” to the top spot in the US National Endurance Series, and LocoMotion took the top spot in the CMRA Championship Endurance aboard their Dunlop-shod Yamaha YZF-R6 this past Saturday, September 19.

The Central Motorcycle Roadracing Association (CMRA) held its fifth round of Championship Endurance, the fourth and final round of the US National Endurance Series, the eigth round of Lightweight sprints, and third round of Solo 30 sprints, bringing over nine hours of racing action to Hallett Motor Racing Circuit, in Hallett, Oklahoma. Gorgeous sunny weather with temperatures in the low 80’s and a light breeze, made for perfect conditions during the entire race.

The Lightweight Sprint grids ran first and were followed by the Solo 30 races, giving a good warm up for the endurance races with large grids of over 20 bikes each. The Four81 Motos – Grom Challenge had 24 entries, and the Island Racing Services – Solo 30 HW Expert, HW Novice, MW Expert, MW Novice grids had a combined total of 32 entries.

The 6-Hour Championship Endurance/US National Endurance Series finished out the day with a combined grid of 24 teams, some from as far away as Maryland, Arkansas, and Kansas, representing the Remember Brooks Gremmels – A Superbike/Heavyweight, C Superbike/Middleweight, Formula 2/Lightweight, and Modern Classic/Super Dinosaur Endurance classes running the 1.8- mile counter-clockwise course.

The start lights went out and the grid surged forward, making a crowded entry into Turn One. Army of Darkness with riders Danny Eslick, Chris Peris, and Ben Walters, pulled out to the early lead with the Village Idiots team of Chris Headley, John Orchard, and Craig Montgomery on their heels. The Yamaha YZF-R6 mounted team of LocoMotion was right on the tail of the Village Idiots, while Team HPC, riding a Yamaha YZF-R6 squared off against the Desert Rats Racing team on their Suzuki GSX-R750. The two person iron man Super Dinosaur team of Buffington Homes Racing on a Yamaha YZF-R6 tangled with C Superbike team Privateer Tools riding a Yamaha YZF-R6 and rounding out the front of the pack.

Army of Darkness continued to hold the lead well into Hour Two, with the Village Idiots and the LocoMotion team of Brandon Altmeyer, James Camacho Jr, and Alonzo Contreras locked into a battle for second. Camacho put down the fastest lap of the race on Lap 38, turning a blistering 1:16.916, but the Village Idiots still held them off. The Desert Rats Racing team of Stephen Guynes, Derek Thomas, and Greg Wanless, continued to have their hands full with Team HPC, while Buffington Homes got around Privateer Tools and held on. Lap times stayed fast, and riding stints were averaging over an hour each for almost all of the teams.

During the third hour, LocoMotion got around the Village Idiots and latched onto second. As the afternoon wore on, Army of Darkness would continue to stretch their lead over the rest of the field by over a lap, and several Lightweight teams surged into the top 10 due to the nature of the course: blind corners with very short straights and a lot of elevation changes evened the playing field for them against the larger bikes with more horse power. Leading the charge was the DJ & the Sunshine Band team, with the all-girl team of G-Baby hunting them down followed by Realtime Racing, all riding Suzuki SV650s.

As the clock wound down, the racing still remained amazingly close, and the final laps were nail biting, edge of seat action. Army of Darkness took the overall USNE and USNE Heavyweight win, turning a mind blowing 267 laps and finishing only one lap ahead of second. LocoMotion was battling hard with Village Idiots for second, with Village Idiots’ final rider, Chris Headley, pulling within 1.3 seconds of James Camacho Jr. Camacho realized Headley was running him down, and dropped the hammer, stretching his lead to just seven seconds before he took the checkers and cemented second overall and first in Middleweight for USNE, and took the overall and C Superbike win for CMRA Championship Endurance, with 266 laps Village Idiots finished third overall and second in Middleweight for USNE, taking second overall and second in C Superbike for CMRA Championship Endurance, turning 266 laps and finishing 9 laps ahead of fourth.

The Desert Rats Racing team took fourth overall and second in Heavyweight for USNE, and took third overall and the win in A Superbike for CMRA Championship Endurance with 257 laps. Team HPC riders Doug Frenchak, Paul Garcia, Jeromy Kumper, Nathaniel Orona, and Will Zamora took fifth overall and third in Heavyweight for USNE, and fourth overall and second A Superbike for CMRA Championship Endurance with 254 laps. The Buffington Homes Racing team of Chris Fields and Kenny Smith took sixth overall and the win in Super Dinosaur for USNE, and fifth overall and the win in Modern Classic for CMRA Championship Endurance with 249 laps.
