Yoshimura Suzuki’s Aaron Yates used a Dunlop qualifying tire on his GSX-R1000 to better his AMA Superbike qualifying time to be the fastest rider Saturday at Infineon Raceway, but Yates’ best effort wasn’t good enough to unseat his teammate, Mat Mladin, from pole position for this weekend’s double-header event.

Yates’ 1:37.266 was a big improvement over his Friday effort of 1:38.012, but not enough to surpass Mladin’s lap record time of 1:36.916, which he recorded Friday on a Dunlop qualifying tire.

After successfully working through race tires and settings, Mladin tried another qualifier Saturday morning, but lapped traffic prevented the Championship leader from going any faster.

Erion Honda’s Jake Zemke didn’t get a perfectly clear lap on his qualifying run but improved his qualifying time from Friday slightly (1:37.361 vs. 1:37.511), good enough to keep the third spot on the grid.

American Honda’s Ben Bostrom didn’t come close to his Friday (1:37.498) qualifying time Saturday (1:39.040), but his Friday time retained a spot on the all-important front row.

Second-row starters, Ben Bostrom’s teammate Miguel Duhamel, Parts Unlimited Ducati Austin’s Eric Bostrom, Attack Kawasaki’s Josh Hayes and Triangle Cycles Yamaha’s Larry Pegram all improved their qualifying times Saturday morning but did not improve their starting positions.

Forty-four riders, the maximum grid capacity, qualified for the AMA Superbike races at Infineon Raceway.
