Wagnon and Cleland Take Four Podiums Each With CMRA

Derek Wagnon and Brandon Cleland took four podiums each at CMRA’s sprint event Sunday, July 27, 2014 at Texas World Speedway in College Station, Texas. A second day of soupy humid heat in the high 90’s and a heat index of 110 degrees made the traction greasy on the 2.9 mile course.

Wagnon rode a Kawasaki ZX-10R and his Suzuki GSX-R750 to the wins in Breast Cancer Research Foundation/P1 Racing – Formula 1 Expert, 212Decals.com A Superbike Expert, B Superstock Expert, and Team Mancuso Powersports SW – B Superbike Expert.

Cleland proved to be the fastest Yamaha YZF-R6 once again, taking four podiums total, winning South Central Race Center – C Superstock Expert, Team Mancuso Powersports SW – C Superbike Expert, and second place in Breast Cancer Research Foundation/P1 Racing – Formula 1 Expert, and B Superstock Expert. Cleland also won the $100 P1 Racing cash purse for riding the first 600 across the finish line again during the Formula 1 race.

The Breast Cancer Research Foundation/P1 Racing – Formula 1 Expert race had a 20 bike grid, and as they lined up for the start, the battle was already brewing between Kawasaki ZX-10R mounted Wagnon, Cleland aboard a Yamaha YZF-R6, and Eddie Thornton riding his BMW S1000RR. These were the top three qualifiers once again, and lap times were fast.

The starting lights went out, and the race was on as Wagnon drag raced Cleland and Thornton into the first turn and took the lead. With Cleland and Thornton on his tail, Wagnon put his head down and took off, turning a fastest lap of the race on lap 2 turning a 1:43.130. Cleland and Thornton went at it again, with Cleland getting by Thornton for second with a fastest lap of 1:44.681. Thornton, still in pursuit, answered with an even faster 1:44.398, but couldn’t get past Cleland. Carlos Lescale tailed the leaders on his BMW S1000RR, running a 1:46.493, barely holding off Yamaha YZF-R6 mounted Eric Williams turning a 1:46.752. You could throw a blanket over seventh through eleventh places as there was only 0.8-second difference over the spread. As the final laps wound down, Wagnon put his head down to get a little distance on Cleland, stretching his lead to 4.311 taking the checkers for the win. Cleland firmly held onto second, with Thornton taking third, Lescale finished fourth, with Eric Williams, Joseph Caruso, Jeff Wrobel, Peyton Inge, Jay Newton, and Bobby Davies rounding out the top 10.

Bringing awareness to finding a cure for Breast Cancer is an important aspect of this race and a donation is made by the CMRA to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation for each entry in the race.

Cleland was on fire in the middleweights, running consistent 1:15 second lap times every race and taking four podiums total, winning South Central Race Center – C Superstock Expert, Team Mancuso Powersports SW – C Superbike Expert, B Superstock Expert, and second place in Breast Cancer Research Foundation/P1 Racing – Formula 1 Expert.

Daniel Adams proved the heat was not an issue for him as he took the wins in D Superstock Expert, Formula 2 Expert, D Superbike Expert, and Lightweight Twins Expert with his Suzuki SV650.

Nick Doolan once again took Top Novice with four wins on his Kawasaki ZX-6R in Lone Star Track Days – B Superstock Novice, North Texas Superbikes – B Superbike Novice, and Fastline Motorcycle School – C Superbike Novice, and Moto Liberty – C Superstock Novice.

A sobering note from Sunday was news of former CMRA racer, Erick Yahir Sanchez, passing away after succumbing to injuries received during a racing incident in Mexico City that day. The CMRA family is deeply saddened by this loss, and send condolences to his family. Yahir was a great competitor and sportsman, and had many friends in the CMRA paddock. His smiling face and big hugs will be missed.
