Village Idiots Back on Top at MSRH Houston with CMRA

The Village Idiots team of Cory Burleson, Chris Headley, John Orchard, and Garet Tomlinson swept the endurance podiums with both the overall CMRA Championship Endurance win and the win in Promomin Oils / eni – C Superbike Endurance with their Dunlop-shod Yamaha YZF-R6 this past Saturday, October 29, 2016.

The Central Motorcycle Roadracing Association (CMRA) held its fifth round of Championship Endurance, 10th round of Lightweight Sprints, and fourth round of Solo 30 Sprints, bringing over 9 hours of racing action to MSR Houston in Angleton, Texas. Sunny weather, temperatures warming to the mid-80’s and a light breeze made great conditions on the 17-turn, 2.38 mile full road course.

The Mini and Lightweight Sprint grids ran first, with up to 35 bikes on the grid in combined entries each for the lightweight sprints. The Island Racing Services – Solo 30 Heavyweight/Middleweight Expert and Novice races, followed by the Solo 30 Lightweight/Ultra-Lightweight Expert and Novice races that rounded out the morning also had large grids of 32 and 26 bikes respectively.

Brandon Cleland rode his RES-prepped, Pirelli-shod Yamaha YZF-R6 to both the overall and Solo 30 Heavyweight Expert wins, turning a blazing 1:34.973 fastest lap on lap three of the Solo 30 Heavyweight race, and was the overall fastest lap of the day.

Zach Boldwyn took a Honda CBR500R to the overall and Solo 30 Lightweight Expert wins, turning an impressive 1:48.234 fastest lap on lap five of the Solo 30 Lightweight race.

The weather stayed perfect for the 6-Hour Championship Endurance race with a combined grid of 17 teams taking the field, representing the Remember Brooks Gremmels – A Superbike/Heavyweight, Promomin Oils / eni – C Superbike, Formula 2, and Modern Classic Endurance classes.

The grid lined up, the lights went out, and it was on. The Skidmarks team was off the to early lead, but was overtaken during the first hour by The Davis Rod & Cycle/LSTD team of Jesse Davis, Andy Galindo, Will Gruy, Alan Phillips, and David Tiede aboard their Yamaha YZF-R1. LocoMotion stalked them in second on a Yamaha YZF-R6, with Yamaha YZF-R6 mounted Village Idiots getting a firm grip on third during the first hour and turned a fastest first hour lap of 1:37.454. Just into Hour 2, the Davis Rod & Cycle/LSTD bike low-sided in front of Suzuki GSX-R1000 mounted team Just Can’t Quit Racing, and then hustled to get the bike back on track. The LocoMotion team of Brandon Altmeyer, Alonzo Contreras, Ryan Max Johnson, Darrell Ricks, and Mark Windham took over the lead and turned the fastest lap of Hour 2 with a 1:38.094. The Village Idiots moved into second, with Just Can’t Quit Racing taking over third. The Skidmarks riding a Yamaha YZF-R6 held off Team HPC, also aboard a Yamaha YZF-R6 moved in to fifth and the Buell 1125R mounted In Torque We Trust team in sixth.

Heading into Hour 3, the lap times continued to drop. The Village Idiots team of Cory Burleson, Chris Headley, John Orchard and Garet Tomlinson took over the lead and held it with the fastest third hour lap of 1:37.454. LocoMotion held off the Just Can’t Quit Racing team of Pete Martins, Ron Mears, Craig Montgomery, and Jeff Wrobel for second, with In Torque We Trust sliding past The Skidmarks and Team HPC. Heading towards Hour 4, In Torque We Trust suffered a mechanical that ended up putting them behind the wall for repairs.

During Hour 4, lap times stayed fast, and the Village Idiots gained a solid one lap lead over the rest of the field, again turning a fastest lap of 1:37.454 for the hour. LocoMotion and Just Can’t Quit Racing held second and third, with The Skidmarks team of Chase Eason, Brady Ipock, Steven Nedd, Jay Newton, and Brian Prescott back into fourth. Team HPC riders Bobby Davies, Doug Frenchak, Jeromy Kumper, Nathaniel Orona, and Will Zamora held down fifth, and Buffington Homes Racing pulled up into sixth on their Yamaha YZF-R6. Going into Hour 5, the positions were static, with the uber consistent Village Idiots putting down another 1:37.454 for the fastest lap of the hour.

During the final hour, the race leaders continued to charge as the sun slid to an almost blinding angle with long shadows forming on parts of the course. As the Apex Predators team of Paul Bradley, Jay Bullard, John McKenzie, and Yorke Oldfather battled with the two man iron butt team of Chris Fields and Kenny Smith of Buffington Homes Racing, they tucked the front in the Sugar and Spice corner, spilling some fluids and bringing out a red flag with approximately 36 minutes left in the race. The race was called due to the clean up involved and not enough time to restart.

The Village Idiots took the Overall Championship Endurance and Promomin Oils / eni – C Superbike Endurance wins, followed by LocoMotion with second overall and second in Promomin Oils / eni – C Superbike Endurance. Just Can’t Quit Racing got third overall and first in Remember Brooks Gremmels – A Superbike Endurance with The Skidmarks finishing fourth overall and third in Promomin Oils / eni – C Superbike Endurance. Team HPC was next, with fifth overall and second in Remember Brooks Gremmels – A Superbike Endurance. Buffington Homes Racing was right behind, with sixth overall and first in Modern Classic Endurance.
