California State Route 138 is closed at State Route 2 near the Mountain Top Café due to construction. The highway will be closed in both west and eastbound directions 24 hours a day, 7 days a week through September 19, 2006. The marked detour off 138 was tested by a Roadracing World staff member today and found to not be motorhome or trailer friendly. California State Route 138 is typically used as a shortcut between Interstate 15 and State Route 14, which leads to the Rosamond exit for Willow Springs International Raceway. For racers coming from the Inland Empire area of Southern California who normally take 138, the best route to avoid the road work is: Take Interstate 15 north over Cajon Pass, take Route 395 north, turn left off 395 onto Phelan Road west, and take Phelan Road to Highway 138 and turn right. And now some additional information from a local: FIRST PERSON/OPINION Via e-mail: Cal-Trans is escorting traffic through the construction zone from Highway 2 to Beekley Road with a pilot car during set days/hours. HOWEVER…I have been through the construction zone with some frequency and quite frankly most RVs or trailers will still have issues as it is soft earth with severe bumps and dips, enough that I would be concerned about bikes secured with tie-downs. But as your staff mentioned in the article online, the detour through Big Pines Highway (N4) has enough hairpins that RVs and trailers are a bit hairy through there as well. INFO FROM CAL-TRANS: Projected construction dates: June 19th through September 19th During the closure, pilot car window hours are M-F 5am-7am and 6pm-8pm. Saturday windows will be 9am-5pm and Sunday will be 7am-3pm. When it rains, there will be NO windows and you will have to take the detour around. We have also found that any vehicle not IN LINE 30 minutes prior to the cutoff is not guaranteed to be escorted through the site. Some of the best updated info on the closure is available here on the local Wrightwood forum: ~http://www.wrightwoodcalif.com/forum/index.php/topic,6010.0.html~ Todd Robinson Cal-Sportbike Wrightwood, California ~http://www.calsportbike.com~ Now, more from Big Al of CMRRA: FIRST PERSON/OPINION Via e-mail: WSMC racers heading for Willow Springs who normally use Highway 138 should take the 395 exit off I-15 and go to Phelan Road or go up another 7 miles to Highway 18. This will bring you right back to 138 past the construction area. Al Lyons CMRRA Lake Elsinore, California
