SERT Suzuki riders Keiichi Kitagawa, Stephane Chambon and Matthieu Lagrive completed 830 laps on their GSX-R1000 Suzuki and turned a two-lap deficit earlier on Sunday morning to close right up to the Yamaha at the 3pm finish this afternoon. Lagrive set the pace virtually from the start and after the first hour, Yamaha GMT moved to second after Kawasaki’s Julien da Costa crashed. Then SERT’s second team – headed by Olivier Four – moved their GSX-R1000 into second place. After 50 laps, Yamaha’s David Checa moved up to challenge the Suzuki, now ridden by former World Supersport rider Stephane Chambon. Checa put in several fast laps including a 1:40’106 and was eating away at the Suzuki Castrol team’s lead at a rate of five-tenths-of-a-second per lap and closed to within nine seconds. Four hours into the race, Checa and Lagrive were locked in a close battle, but Lagrive held the lead until he pitted, allowing the Yamaha to take control. Said SERT Team Manager Dominique Melliand: “The most dangerous rider to us is Checa as he is very fast and I’m thinking about sending out Kitagawa at the same time as their riders Costes or Gimbert and putting Lagrive out against Checa later.” At midnight, Yamaha held the lead from Suzuki number two team of Dietrich, Four and Coxhell with Suzuki Castrol now third and as the night wore on, Yamaha managed to get one lap clear of the chasing Suzuki two team and two laps over Suzuki Castrol. But Melliand’s Le Mans-based team turned on the pressure throughout the morning and stormed from two laps down to finish on the same lap. Results: 1 GMT 94 (Yamaha) 830 laps, 2 Suzuki Castrol (Suzuki) 830, 3 Suzuki Castrol 2 (Suzuki) 823, 4 National Motos (Honda) 809, 5 Team Acropolis EMS 99 (Yamaha) 802, 6 Bolliger Team Switzerland (Kawasaki) 795, 7 Team AM Moto Racing (Suzuki) 793, 8 JLC Moto Ulteamatum (Suzuki) 793, 9 Decibels Endurance 33 (Yamaha) 791, 10 Team DAP Moto 91 Mobil 1 (Honda) 786.
