The remainder of on-track activities Friday at the AMA Superbike Championship event at Infineon Raceway have been postponed due to rain. A light rain began to fall at approximately 11:05 a.m., causing the first Formula Xtreme practice session to be red-flagged after 15 of its scheduled 60 minutes. Full, dry practice sessions for the Supersport and Superbike classes had already run. The Superstock class did not get on track Friday. Once the rain started, it continued into the afternoon. At 3:00 p.m., AMA Pro Racing officials met with Infineon Raceway officials and decided to postpone the rest of the day’s on track activities, which included Superbike and Formula Xtreme qualifying sessions. If Saturday’s qualifying sessions are rained out at Infineon Raceway, procedures are in place to set the grids by using practice times and/or point standings, depending on the circumstances. No revised schedule of events will be released until Saturday morning. The likelihood of racing on Monday at Infineon Raceway is small, according to statements made by AMA Pro Racing Road Race Series Manager Ron Barrick during Friday’s rider’s meeting. Barrick told the riders that the television production company cannot stay on Monday and that isolated rain showers are forecast all weekend, including Monday. This year’s AMA event at Infineon Raceway was moved from early-May to two weeks later in May in hopes of having better weather. Ironically, the early-May weekend had near-perfect weather, according to one Infineon Raceway official. More, from a press release issued by Infineon Raceway: Mladin Posts Top Superbike Time in Rain-Shortened Day SONOMA, Calif. (IMMEDIATE RELEASE) – Rain washed away most of the racing action on Friday at Infineon Raceway during the Kawasaki AMA Superbike Showdown, presented by Supercuts. The rain began to fall just before noon over the Sonoma Valley, and the action was officially called for the day at 3:30 p.m. (all times Pacific). The only action that took place on Friday was practice sessions for Pro Honda Oils Supersport and Superbike. Lockhart Phillips USA Formula Xtreme squeezed in an abbreviated session before the red flag was waved for rain. Six-time AMA Superbike champion Mat Mladin (Suzuki) posted the top time in Superbike practice at 1 minute, 36.124 seconds over the 12-turn, 2.2-mile road course. Current AMA Superbike points leader Ben Spies (Suzuki) was second (1:36.967), with Aaron Yates (Suzuki) third (1:37.284). Spies was tops in Supersport (1:38.966), with Yamaha’s Jamie Hacking second (1:39.041) and Suzuki’s Geoff May third (1:39.246). Those race fans with tickets to Friday’s Superbike qualifying have one of two options: –Apply Friday’s ticket value to the purchase of a Saturday or Sunday ticket this weekend. –Receive a refund in the amount of the ticket purchased by returning your Friday ticket to the ticket office where it was purchased. An updated schedule for the remainder of the weekend is expected to be released by AMA officials on Saturday. For more information, call 800-870-RACE.
