Yoshimura Suzuki’s Mat Mladin claimed provisional pole position during AMA Superbike qualifying Friday afternoon at Road Atlanta. In the last quarter of the 50-minute session, Mladin turned a time of 1:22.339, over 0.8 second faster than anyone else but more than 0.2 second slower than his own lap record, which was set with a qualifier tire in 2004. Mladin said he changed very little on his works GSX-R1000 Friday afternoon, choosing instead to concentrate on evaluating race tires. If Mladin gets pole position in Saturday morning’s final qualifying session, he will have earned every pole position available in 2005, a total of 10, a new single-season record. Mladin already holds the record for most AMA Superbike pole positions in a career, 46. Second-fastest Friday was Mladin’s main Championship challenger and teammate Ben Spies, who turned a 1:23.161 on his GSX-R1000. Superbike rookie Spies said he is still looking for the front end feel he has been searching for all year. Miguel Duhamel was quick all day Friday and turned a third-fastest 1:23.337 on his American Honda-developed CBR1000RR Superbike. Aaron Yates put the third Yoshimura Suzuki GSX-R1000 on the provisional front row with a 1:23.390, but said he would like his bike to turn a little better. Neil Hodgson’s team made wholesale changes to his Parts Unlimited Ducati Austin 999 for Road Atlanta, which he said included fitting older parts. The former World Superbike Champion was fifth-fastest Friday with a 1:23.784. Duhamel’s teammate Jake Zemke was sixth-best with a 1:24.038 on his CBR1000RR. Attack Kawasaki’s Josh Hayes turned a sixth-quickest 1:24.482 on his factory-supported ZX-10R and said he had ideas to make it better Saturday morning. Hodgson’s teammate Eric Bostrom ended up in the final spot on the provisional second row with a 1:24.931, which he thinks he could have bettered if he hadn’t run out of fuel out on track late in the session. Mat Mladin Motorsports Suzuki’s Marty Craggill was the fastest privateer with a ninth-fastest 1:25.384 on his GSX-R1000, and Lion Racing Suzuki’s John Haner (1:25.493) was tenth-fastest and the top non-Dunlop rider on his Pirelli-shod GSX-R1000.
