Reno Karimian (Suz GSX-R1000), 1:47.407 More, from a press release issued by Yoshimura Suzuki: Mat Mladin shatters Daytona Supebike lap record and is on provisional pole. Teamate Ben Spies second fastest. March 9, 2006 – Daytona, FL – Team Suzuki/Yoshimura rider Mat Mladin started the week slowly but destroyed the Superbike track record here in Daytona today with a blistering 1:37.075 qualifying run. This time is over a second faster then the previous lap record (also Mladin’s) of 1:38.232. “We missed the December test as I still wasn’t 100% from my surgery,” Mat commented from pit wall this morning, “So we were a bit behind in our settings. We had to play a bit of catch-up.” Mat and his team got to work on Tuesday and started to drop the lap times. “Yesterday we got down to work and every session got going a little quicker.” Mladin said, “Today we put it together and it all worked out good. ” Teammate Ben Spies was not far behind with an impressive 1:37.558. Aaron Yates, still recovering from a testing incident at Fontana earlier in the year was fighting physical limitations and posted 9th fastest. Suzuki/Yoshimura team manager Don Sakakura was optimistic about Saturday’s race, “Yeah, qualifying looked pretty good, Mat and Ben are really riding well and the bikes are performing very nicely. I think we have a good shot at this thing Saturday.” When asked about Aaron’s run Don said, “Aaron is still a little sore from Fontana so I was surprised to see him up as high as he was. With him hurting his shoulder, it is very hard on him physically under braking. Don’t count him out though, he’s a pretty tough guy.” More, from a press release issued by Team Suzuki: Yoshimura Suzuki’s Mat Mladin set pole position for Saturday’s opening AMA Superbike Championship race in Daytona, Florida today with team mate Ben Spies a close second. Reigning Champion Mladin put in a time of 1:37.075 on his GSX-R1000 a faster time than the six-time Champion did last year at the same event with Spies less than half-a-second behind. Third Yoshimura team rider Aaron Yates recorded the ninth fastest time and will lead the all-Suzuki third-row which includes Roberto Pietri, Eric Wood and Jake Holden.
