Jordan Suzuki’s Aaron Yates turned the fastest lap time during the AMA Pro National Guard American Superbike warm-up session Sunday morning at Auto Club Speedway, but the veteran rider’s weekend came to an end shortly thereafter when he crashed, was hit by another and suffered a suspected broken leg. “He came under me in Turn Nine,” said Team M4 Monster Energy Suzuki’s Chris Ulrich. “He lit it up and got a good drive out. I thought I would tuck in and get a tow off him down the infield straight. He did this nice wheelie, but when he set it down the front wheel came right out from underneath him. “I was pinned in third gear and had a bike and rider in the track right in front of me. I had nowhere to go. I was hoping a gap would open up, but it didn’t. I think I ran over his legs. “I feel really bad about it. You never want to get hurt, and you never ever want to hurt somebody else. I feel really bad that it turned out that way.” Yates was transported to Arrowhead Regional Medical center via ambulance. According to Yates’ mechanic Ryan Landers, the team was “pretty sure he broke one of his legs in two spots.” Landers said X-rays had not been done to confirm the fractures yet, but Yates’ father Lucky, who is with Yates, told the team he was “pretty sure” of the leg fractures. Landers said the data showed that Yates’ front wheel was off the ground for three seconds immediately prior to the crash, which corresponded with what SPEED commentator Scott Russell said he saw in SPEED’s video of the incident. “It looked like he carried that wheelie into the kink in the back straight,” said Russell. “He was leaned over when he set it down, and the front tire never had a chance. It washed right out. Chris [Ulrich] had nowhere to go. It’s not his fault.” Update: It is expected that Yates will undergo surgery tonight at the hands of orthopedic surgeon Dr. Thomas Bryan at Queen of the Valley Hospital, in West Covina, California, according to his team. Yates suffered two displaced fractures of his right tibia and a single displaced fracture of his right fibula. Due to the complexity of the surgery, Yates is expected to remain in the hospital in Southern California for about one week before he will be allowed to fly home to Georgia, according to Michael Jordan Motorsports Suzuki’s Pete Mauhar.
