A source at VIR said that this weekend’s AMA National, postponed due to the impending arrival of Hurricane Ivan in the Danville, Virginia area, has been rescheduled for October 8-10.

Bob Compton, Head of Security at VIR, posted on WERA.com last night, “AMA has rescheduled for October 8, 9, & 10 at VIR since this weekends race was cancelled due to hurricane Ivan.” In a follow-up post, Compton wrote, “I believe the official press release will be tomorrow. This decision was reached late this evening.”

After WERA Operations Manager and BBS moderator Sean Clarke vouched for Compton’s veracity on the site and in an e-mail to roadracingworld.com this morning, we posted that the race had been rescheduled.

But a VIR spokesman immediately called and said that rescheduling is not a done deal.

“Not true,” said VIR spokesperson John Gardner in regards to the posting stating that this weekend’s AMA Superbike event had been rescheduled for October 8-10. “We are talking with them (AMA Pro Racing) about that weekend, but we have a client who has booked the track that weekend. We are in negotiations with them right now, but we have not come to an agreement at this time.”

Asked if the track and AMA Pro Racing were looking at any other weekends to make up the event, “No, that is the only weekend we are trying to put together. That is the only weekend under discussion,” said Gardner.

Asked what would happen if VIR and AMA Pro Racing were not able to come to terms with the track’s client on that weekend, Gardner said, “I don’t know.”

Asked about Compton’s post on the Internet, Gardner said “Bob Compton is Head of Security for the track. He should be a good source, but in this case he was wrong.”

An official announcement of the rescheduling has not been made by AMA Pro Racing.
