TOYE TAKES ALL CHALLENGERS

Sonoma Raceway, at Sears Point, CA, survived the nearby 6.1 earthquake a week earlier with no damage, allowing the world class facility to play host to the AFM’s sixth round on the weekend of August 30-31. The flowing track attracted riders from all over as the grids were stacked with talent.

Formula Pacific was once again anyone’s race as the front row had two guests in the forms of Joey Pascarella with his Dunlop-shod BP Racing/RaceFuelZ Yamaha YZF-R6 and Jeremy Toye on his Lee’s Cycle Kawasaki ZX-10R on Pirellis, as Lenny Hale on his KFG Racing Suzuki and the RCR Yamaha YZF-R1 of Ricky Corey, all on Dunlops, rounded out the front row. The second row was also stacked with Chris Siglin, Michael Earnest, Tyler O’Hara and an open spot where Sebastio Ferrera should have been but was not due to a crash in practice.

When the green flag dropped, Corey, Toye, Hale, Pascarella and Siglin all formed a five-bike breakaway. The 1000cc bikes up front all dropped into the 1:39s right away, and Toye turned up the pace to take the lead with a string of mid 1:38s. Behind Toye, Corey also dropped into the 1:38 while trying to simultaneously challenge Toye and fight off a hard charging Pascarella. Pascarella rode to the limits of his bike, ripping off a 1:38.022 while working his way to second place. Toye did exactly what he needed to up front, turning in flawless laps, and in the end, Pascarella was not able to reel in Toye. Hale was able to maintain forth place while Siglin rounded out the top five with his Fastline Performance BMW on Pirellis.
