Kruger earns strong sixth at the first race at the Frohburger Dreieck, Dunlop forced to retire

Frohburg/Germany. The Penz13.com Racing Team is taking part in this weekends 52nd Frohburger ADAC Dreieckrennen “Joey Dunlop OPEN” with a high profile squad. Multiple TT-winner Michael Dunlop came over from Northern Ireland to ride the team’s BMW S 1000 RR, also Dan Kruger came over from Canada to Germany to power a BMW S 1000 RR around the Frohburger Dreieck.

Both Dunlop and Kruger are taking part in two categories: The International Road Racing Championship “IRRC” in the Superbikes and in the Open-Race of the Superbikes. Saturday saw the qualifying sessions for both classes as well as the first race for the Open bikes.

Qualifying

Michael Dunlop powered to a third spot on the grid for the International Road Racing Championship at Frohburg today. The Penz13.com rider put in a best effort of 1:36,629 Minutes and stayed 1,164 seconds behind Pace-Setter Didier Grams on Pole.

Dan Kruger earned a twelfth on the grid for the IRRC races. It’s been the first attempt of the Canadian at the Frohburger Dreieck and he got a personal best of 1:42,645 Minutes.

For the Open-race Dunlop also earned a third spot on the grid courtesy of 1:38,322 Minutes. The first session saw a slight wet track. Pole Position as well went to Didier Grams by a 2.167 seconds faster time than Dunlop’s. Dan Kruger powered to a 1:43,308 lap and earned eleventh on the grid.

Saturday’s Race

Both Dunlop and Kruger took off with an excellent start. Whereas the Northern Irish rider took over second, the Canadian boy was able to slot into sixth, coming from eleventh.

Unfortunately Dunlop had to retire due to electronic problems at the end of the race, heading for a podium spot.

Kruger was able to lap his first race at the Frohburger Dreieck with a high pace and brought home a strong sixth place.

Michael Dunlop – DNF

Unfortunately I had to retire due to an electronic problem which lead to a worn tire early. That’s not the team’s fault but it’s quite a pity as a podium was in there today. I am sure too that we could find another solution if Kurt [Böck, BMW HP RaceSupport] would be here. Tomorrow there are further three races and we’ll go for it once more.

Dan Kruger – P6

I pushed very hard at the beginning as I had a real good start and that motivates you even more. But then I saw a couple of guys crashing, the one bike was flying high up in the air and the other two crashed when trying to overtake me. Maybe I started to think too much after that and did a bit more easy going. In the fast sections I was able to make up ground as I had it pinned. I don’t feel like that has been something special today but for my first race here not too bad either. Tomorrow there are three more to go.
