Defending AMA Supersport Champion Tommy Hayden won his second AMA Supersport race of 2005 Sunday at Infineon Raceway. Riding his factory Kawasaki ZX-6RR, Hayden raced closely with Yamaha teammates Jason DiSalvo and Jamie Hacking throughout the 17-lap event. Hayden held off DiSalvo to win by 0.413 second, while Hacking slipped slightly backward to a safe third on the final laps. Hayden’s teammate and younger brother Roger Hayden was happy with fourth after struggling throughout practice and qualifying. Aaron Gobert crashed on the last lap while contesting fourth with Hayden. Gobert was relatively uninjured in the high-speed fall, and the crash promoted Yoshimura Suzuki’s Ben Spies to fifth. Gobert’s teammate Damon Buckmaster crossed the finish line sixth, three seconds ahead of Attack Kawasaki’s Ben Attard. Attard just held off Team M4 EMGO Suzuki’s Geoff May after a race-long fight. May finished seventh on his Pirelli-shod GSX-R600, the first non-Dunlop finisher. Topline Printing Yamaha’s Chris Peris and MPTRacing.com Suzuki’s Danny Eslick rounded out the top 10. The win moved Tommy Hayden (who now has 13 career wins, second on the all-time AMA Supersport win list) from second to first in the AMA Supersport Championship point standings after four of 10 races.
