Szoke takes second straight win at St-Eustache ST-EUSTACHE, Que. (July 7, 2013) – Jordan Szoke claimed his second straight Mopar Canadian Superbike Championship win of the 2013 season at Autodrome St-Eustache on Sunday. The defending national champion took the lead on lap 10 of the rain-shortened 21-lap race and went on to score a 0.697-sec. victory on his Waznie Racing / BMW Motorrad Canada / Parts Canada BMW S1000RR. Szoke completed the 37.170km (22.302-mile) race distance in 16 minutes, 0.701 secs. for an average speed of 139.286km/h (83.572 mph). After leading the first nine laps from pole position, Jodi Christie settled for his second straight runner-up finish aboard the Jodi Christie Racing / Honda Canada / Accelerated Technologies Honda CBR1000RR and Alex Welsh completed the podium on the AW7R / Kenwood Electronics Canada / Parts Canada Suzuki GSX-R1000. “I was a little hard on myself after missing the pole yesterday,” said Brantford, Ont.’s Szoke after his third career win at Autodrome St-Eustache and his second in succession. “But we made a big change last night and did a race distance this morning and we knew we were in good shape.” Szoke’s win allowed him to open up a 20-point lead over Christie in the Mopar Canadian Superbike Championship standings. The eight-time national champion now has 111 points to the 91 of Christie after two of six events. Christie took advantage of his first career Magneti Marelli SuperPole success to grab the lead at the start of the feature race, with Welsh running second and Szoke third. These three quickly pulled away from the rest of the pack, with Szoke snatching second from Welsh in the chicane on lap three, then taking the lead with a move up the inside of Christie entering the bowl turn at the end of the 10th lap. Welsh also took advantage to seize second from the Keene, Ont. rider and put pressure on Szoke. But as the race entered its closing laps Welsh’s bike developed a mechanical problem and Christie was able to retake second spot. Szoke managed to open up a lead of just over 1.5 secs. before easing off as rain started falling, which led to the race being stopped a lap early. “I wanted to get into the lead and take off,” Szoke said. “Alex is always fast here. I didn’t realize he had a problem. When I saw the rain I backed it down about a second a lap and just tried to preserve the lead.” For the second race in a row Christie led the early laps but couldn’t lock up his first career national Superbike race win. “When I got passed by Jordan and Alex in that last corner I lost my rhythm a bit,” he admitted. “I had almost thrown it away there a couple of laps earlier and I think they took advantage of that.” After hounding Szoke between laps 10 and 15 Welsh lost ground with a suspected fuel pick-up problem and finished 7.470 secs. back in third place. “About halfway through something started going wrong with the bike,” explained the Uxbridge, Ont. rider, who remains third in the Mopar Canadian Superbike point standings with 78 points. “I thought I could fix it and went through a few [engine] maps but it was still sputtering. It’s a shame because I felt like we had the whole package today. It was shaping up to be a good race.” Despite suffering a broken right thumb in a qualifying crash on Saturday, Kleinburg, Ont.’s Frank Trombino finished a strong fourth in the debut of the Royal Plumbing / FDS Racing Aprilia RSV4. Trombino worked his way up from seventh on the opening lap and passed the MotoNation BMW S1000RR of Longueuil, Que.’s Sebastien Tremblay just two laps before the finish. Trevor Daley also worked his way through the field to claim sixth at the end aboard the ProStar Motorsports / One Speed Honda CBR1000RR. The Mississauga, Ont. rider was 10th at the end of the first lap but made steady progress up the board, finally holding off the Excel Honda / Holt / Seamont Brokerage Honda CBR1000RR of St-Lazare, Que.’s Franklyn Dominguez at the line. Jean-Francois Cyr of Ste-Adele, Que., the 2003 St-Eustache Superbike winner placed eighth riding the CyRacing / RaceLine Aprilia RSV4 and after qualifying an impressive sixth on the Raffa Racing / Team Couturier Honda CBR600RR Ste-Marthe, Que.’s Louie Raffa claimed ninth spot. Kristopher Garvie of Caledon, Ont. rounded out the top 10 on his Honda Canada / Genics Inc. Honda CBR600RR, just ahead of the GoLo Racing / Dua Motorsport / Pro Cycle Yamaha YZF-R6 of rookie Pro Austin Shaw-O’Leary from Falmouth, N.S. In other action on Sunday, Christie scored his second straight Hindle Exhaust Pro Sport Bike victory and his second straight win in the class at St-Eustache. The two-time defending class champion led all 18 laps on his Honda CBR600RR. Calgary’s John Ross MacRae claimed a career-high second place finish, 1.377 secs. behind Christie on the Riedmann Racing / Castrol / Blackfoot Triumph 675 after a good battle with the Royal Distributing Racing Team / MV Agusta Canada / Motovan MV Agusta F3 of Beaconsfield, Que.’s Michael Leon, which finished third. Maple Ridge, B.C.’s Steve Crevier won the Harley-Davidson Canada XR1200 Cup race to stretch his lead in the point standings. Riding for the MotoSport Plus team, the two-time defending class champion finished 2.814-secs. clear of the Ruthless Racing duo of MacRae and North Vancouver’s Darren James. After claiming the Tactical Products Canada LUMINOX Pole Award in qualifying on Saturday, Toronto’s Michael Taylor was unable to start Sunday’s race after he developed a clutch problem on his Mackie Harley-Davidson-backed entry. Mitchel Card of Ripley, Ont. claimed his first career national race wins as he swept both the Magneti Marelli Amateur Superbike and the Bazzaz / Inside Motorcycles Amateur Sport Bike races at St-Eustache. In Amateur Superbike, Card’s Honda CBR600RR held off the BMW S1000RR of Toronto’s Riley Dawe by 1.469 secs. Opening round winner Steve Hoffarth of Orangeville, Ont. finished a close third on another BMW S1000RR. Hoffarth retains a five-point lead over Dawe in the class standings. In Amateur Sport Bike, Card finished 2.546 secs. ahead of the Yamaha YZF-R6 of points leader Dawe. Schomberg, Ont.’s Marco Sousa placed third aboard a Suzuki GSX-R600. Nineteen-year-old Japanese star Hikari Okubo completed a sweep of the weekend’s Honda CBR250R National Race Series rounds on Sunday. The Powersports Canada-backed rider beat points leader Tomas Casas of Peterborough, Ont. by 15.290 secs. in the 14-lap race. Riding for 613 Motorsports, Ottawa’s Samuel Dutrisac placed third behind the Peterborough Cycle Salvage-backed bike of Casas.
