SZOKE HANGS ON FOR POLE CALGARY, AB Jordan Szoke withstood a late challenge from Kevin Lacombe to claim pole position for round three of the Parts Canada Superbike Championship at Race City Motorsport Park Saturday. Szoke, the series points leader, claimed his second Vicious-I Pole Position Award of the year with a time of one minute, 16.052 seconds (152.3 km/h) around the 3.2km Race City road course on his Canadian Kawasaki Motors Kawasaki ZX-10R. That time was only 0.003 secs. quicker than the best effort of Lacombe on his Picotte Performance / Yamaha Canada / Toyota Yamaha YZF-R1. Both were under the lap record time of 1:16.508 set by Pascal Picotte in 2004. “The time seems to be coming fairly easily,” said Szoke, who is going for his third straight Parts Canada Superbike win on Sunday. “The bike is very consistent, very easy.” Szoke and Lacombe traded the top spot over the final 15 minutes of the hour-long qualifying session. The Brantford, ON rider put in his fastest time with just under five minutes remaining. Lacombe replied with a 1:16.055 on his final flying lap. He could have put in one more lap before the end of the session but mistakenly thought he had claimed the top spot. “I knew it was pretty much the last lap and I thought I had the pole,” explained the Granby, QC racer. “I knew I had a little bit more. I made a few mistakes.” Szoke received $500 from Vicious-I for qualifying fastest and earned four points toward the Parts Canada Superbike Championship, giving him 110 for the season. Lacombe picked up three points for qualifying second and moved past Francis Martin into second in the standings with 82 points. Martin qualified fifth for the Superbike race on his Team Suzuki / Blackfoot Suzuki GSX-R1000. Calgary’s Clint McBain, who won a pair of Superbike nationals at Race City last year, will start third Sunday after setting a time of 1:16.221 on his Team Suzuki / Blackfoot Suzuki GSX-R1000. “We’re still making changes but we’re getting closer,” McBain said. “The race should be interesting. I think it will be very important to get a good start. It could be tough to pass here.” The front row is completed by Szoke’s teammate Tom Kipp. The Chardon, OH rider put in a time of 1:16.676 on his Kawasaki ZX-10R in qualifying. In other action at Race City, Szoke shattered the lap record in qualifying for the Hindle Exhaust Pro 600 Sport Bike class with a time of 1:17.661 on his Kawasaki ZX-6RR. Lacombe was second at 1:17.941 on his Yamaha YZF-R6 and Kipp qualified third with a 1:18.050 on his Kawasaki. Calgary riders Clint McBain and Guy Tomlinson will start fourth and eighth respectively on Sunday’s Pro 600 Sport Bike grid, both on Suzuki GSX-R600s. Fourteen-year-old Brett McCormick claimed pole for the International Motorcycle SUPERSHOW Amateur 600 Sport Bike class. The Saskatoon rider put in a time of 1:19.941 on his Yamaha, easily topping the Honda of Granby, QC’s Karl Daigle, which qualified second at 1:22.222. Dany Jourdain of St-Jean Richelieu, QC was third with a 1:23.143 on his Suzuki GSX-R600. McCormick will also start on pole in Canadian Thunder on his Buell.
