TORONTO, ON Jordan Szoke comes to this weekend’s Parts Canada Superbike Championship doubleheader at Mosport International Raceway riding a wave of almost historic proportions. As the 2006 season reaches its halfway point, the runaway points leader from Brantford, ON is on pace to etch his name in the Canadian Superbike record books. Two weeks ago at Calgary’s Race City Motorsport Park Szoke became the first racer in 13 years to sweep the first three races of the Canadian season. Should the Canadian Kawasaki factory rider win both races at Mosport, he would tie Steve Crevier’s record for most wins at the start of a campaign with five, set in 1992. A Mosport sweep would also tie the record for most wins in a season, a record Szoke already has a share of thanks to his five-win effort in 2002. In addition to Crevier’s five victories in 1992, Pascal Picotte won five in 2004. Job one, however, will be maintaining or adding to his commanding Parts Canada Superbike Championship lead, which stands at 41 points over Kevin Lacombe, 160-119. “It’s cool to set records,” said Szoke, who won the Canadian title in 1998 and 2002. “But it’s all about winning the championship. I’ve been in this situation before. I know how to win a championship.” Szoke’s strong start to the season masks just how competitive the Parts Canada Superbike tour is this year. At each of the first three races he has come under threat from a different rider. At the season opener at Shannonville Motorsport Park it was Picotte Performance / Yamaha Canada / Toyota Yamaha’s Lacombe of Granby, QC, who has finished on the podium at all three rounds. Defending series champion Francis Martin, from Rock Forest, QC hounded Szoke all the way at Le Circuit Mont-Tremblant aboard his Team Suzuki / Blackfoot Suzuki and comes to Mosport third in the series standings. At Race City Martin’s teammate Clint McBain of Calgary traded the lead repeatedly with Szoke before settling for second. Another threat is Lacombe’s Yamaha team leader Pascal Picotte. The St-Cecile Milton, QC rider is coming back from injury but has won the last four Superbike races at Mosport. And there is Szoke’s own Canadian Kawasaki teammate, Tom Kipp of Chardon, OH. Szoke will also try to maintain his lead in the Hindle Exhaust Pro 600 Sport Bike standings. After an 11th-place finish in Calgary he comes to Mosport nursing a one-point lead over McBain, while Calgary winner Lacombe is now just a further eight points behind. This weekend’s action also sees the fourth round of the International Motorcycle SUPERSHOW Amateur 600 Sport Bike series, which is led by Karl Daigle of Granby, QC riding a Honda. The Thunder class for twins will stage two feature races this weekend. Buell rider Darren James of North Vancouver comes to Mosport with the points lead. In Suzuki SV650 National Cup Kincardine, ON’s Dave Bagshaw will try to extend his points lead in Sunday’s race. Qualifying for the Superbike, Pro 600 Sport Bike and Thunder classes will be held Friday, with races Saturday and Sunday. Amateur 600 Sport Bike and SV650 Cup will qualify Saturday.
