Maxwell takes pole position at Hidden Valley Raceway and sets new best lap Team Suzuki’s Wayne Maxwell will start from pole position for tomorrow’s QBE Australian Superbike Championship races, after setting a new best lap of 1.06.997 in today’s Superpole at Hidden Valley Raceway. Maxwell, who was the only rider to break into the 1m.06’s will be joined on the front row of the grid by his teammate, Team Volvo Suzuki rider Robbie Bugden and Team Honda Racing rider Jamie Stauffer. The championship leader dominated today’s sessions and said while he wanted to take a clean sweep at Hidden Valley he wouldn’t his championship “The GSXR worked awesome in the hot conditions,” Maxwell said. “The track temperature was over 55 degrees so I asked a lot of that Dunlop tyre to be the first man into the 6’s. “I couldn’t be happier and to take my first pole for Team Suzuki and reward the guys is fantastic. We are now one race clear, but we will just take it as we have so far this weekend, session-by-session and race-by-race. “We have a warm-up and two races to go, it would be nice to get my first proper clean sweep but if it is risky we will have to play smart and think championship,” Maxwell continued. While the fastest lap of the Motul Supersport Superpole was set by Aaron Morris, championship leader Daniel Falzon will start from the number one grid spot. Morris was penalised one grid position due to a machine eligibility issue. Morris will start from second on the grid with fellow Yamaha rider Mike Jones rounding out the front row. Falzon said he was surprised to get his lap times down into the 1m.09s. “I am very happy with our Superpole result,” Falzon said. “To be starting from pole position on my favourite track is just awesome “I am surprised by my time. To go 1.09.391 is much faster than I thought we would go this weekend. “It is fantastic to be racing alongside Supercross I never get to see it myself so I am really enjoying it. Kawasaki rider Matt Walters led home Next Gen Motorsports Ben Nicholson in today’s opening Prostock race. Walters set a new race lap record of 1.08.337 and has extended his championship lead. DARWIN NT – Demonstrating a long-term vision and renewed commitment to their event spectators and competitors alike, Melbourne based International Entertainment Group (IEG) has today announced it will be making fundamental changes to the structure of its various motorcycle racing properties for 2014 and beyond. Building on the success of last year’s Supercross at the Motorcycle Grand Prix at Phillip Island, IEG has worked side-by-side with the Northern Territory Government to deliver Darwin its second premier motorsport event. Hosted at Hidden Valley Raceway for the first time, this weekend the unique, world first event concept delivers three disciplines of motorcycle competition for competitors and fans. IEG Managing Director Yarrive Konsky acknowledged the QBE Australian Superbike Championship needs a concentrated effort. “Its not hard to research motorsport throughout the world and recognise paying spectators want more than just one discipline of racing, more than one activity,” Konsky explained. “It’s our responsibilities as promoters to keep them engaged for the day. F1 in Melbourne has upwards of five different car categories racing, as well as an action sport centre, trade displays and in the past Crusty Demons of Dirt and Nitro Circus. “We are after all promoters and are responsible of providing to spectators, riders and sponsors, gone are the days of merely running a race event using volunteers.” IEG can confirm the following for 2014; – Five rounds of Australian Superbike Championships. – 2 + 4 events will run independently of the championship as long as it is viable. – There will be TV at every round. – The new Superbike class will see both classes combined into 1 category with one set of rules. MA over the course of the coming weeks is doing their own independent study to determine the final outcome. – A minimum of two of the five rounds will incorporate the Australian Supercross Championships. – A new production class will be introduced. “Our promise is – the QBE Australian Superbike Championship needs a concentrated effort and IEG need to ensure everything we offer we provide – my goal is to be consistent,” Konsky continued. “IEG want to concentrate on delivery, authenticity and activation. “We will continue to communicate with teams and the industry and we endeavour to have a calendar out within two weeks. We already have four of the five rounds confirmed.”
