Stargel Aprilia’s Brian Stokes won the WERA Sportsman Heavyweight Twins Superbike eight-lap sprint race Friday at Road Atlanta and in doing so earned a $10,000 Championship contingency bonus from Aprilia USA. Stokes rode a Michelin-shod, Aprilia RSV1000R Mille owned by Tim Robinson and prepared by DucShop to a 28.6-second margin of victory over Touring Sport’s Frank Shockley, who also rode an Aprilia, and Brad Duncan, who rode a Suzuki SV1000. Stokes’ main challenger for the win and the Aprilia contingency looked to be Seacoast Sport Cycle’s Aaron Clark, a former Aprilia Cup Challenge Champion who built a 150-horsepower RSV for the race, but Clark highsided on the first lap of the sprint coming out of turn five. The race was red-flagged as Clark’s Aprilia was lying in the track and on fire, briefly, but Clark was able to ride his machine back to the pits and make repairs. Clark, however, missed the green flag of the re-start and started well behind the field, eventually finishing fourth in the six-rider contest. Clark and Stokes will go for another $10,000 Championship contingency bonus from Aprilia next week, October 21-23, at the CCS/Formula USA Race of Champions at Daytona International Speedway, where Ducati will also have a $10,000 Championship contingency bonus posted in CCS SuperTwins.
