Show Us Your Rides, Part 46: Michael Gougis

© 2015, Roadracing World Publishing, Inc.

This off-season we’re running a series showing your motorcycles, starting with your racebike or track-day bike. But not just your road racing or track-day bike, but also your streetbike, motocross bike, dirt bike, pit bike, mini bike, trials bike, land-speed bike, drag bike, speedway bike, whatever you’ve got. If you have more than one bike, send photos of them all–alone or with you! Include your city, state and a few facts about what you do. Send in-focus bike photos (as jpeg files) along with the make, model and year of each bike and your name, age, racing or track-day organization (if applicable), city and state, plus the name of the photographer, to [email protected]. By sending us the photos, you are certifying that you own the rights to the photos and are giving us permission to feature them on roadracingworld.com. They may be posted on roadracingworld.com during slow news days.

Many more riders have sent in photos and info than we anticipated, and to deal with the flood of applications, we’re giving preference to people who have set up a rider profile on roadracingworld.com, here: https://www.roadracingworld.com/signup/

Seen here in our 46th installment are photos sent in by WERA racer Michael Gougis, age 53, from Claremont, California, who writes about his bikes, “My 2002 Yamaha YZF-R1 has an Akrapovic slip-on and a Dynojet Power Commander, a Brembo braking system and totally cool aftermarket bodywork from Hong Kong. A well-cared-for used literbike is probably the best bargain in performance motoring, be it on two wheels, three or four. This thing handles just fine at track-day speeds, will top 160 mph before I can blink, and puts a grin on my face every time I walk into the garage.

“My 2007 BMW F800S is my daily commuter and sport-touring machine. It has an aftermarket pipe, but everything else is completely stock. There’s nothing like a lightweight and torquey sport-touring bike for covering miles in comfort at speed.

“My 2005 Suzuki SV650 racebike has a GSX-R front end, an Ohlins shock, an M4 pipe and a Dynojet Power Commander, with a few other goodies here and there. She’s been a good, solid mount, and she landed me a small pile of race wins and three class championships in 2014.

“There’s also a shot of yet another one of my SV racebikes. This was a 2007 Suzuki SV650 purchased new. I piled about 38,000 street miles on it, pulled all the street bodywork off, threw on some Armour bodywork from Woodcraft Technologies (painted in the driveway with a rattle can), a 2001 GSX-R1000 shock and dogbones, a Delkevic slip-on, a GSX-R steering damper and had Ed Sorbo at Lindemann Engineering tweak the forks. I think it still had the original spark plugs in it when this photo was taken at the WERA West season-opener at Auto Club Speedway in January 2013. I used it to win the 2013 WERA West Lightweight Twins Superstock Championship.

“I’m mostly writing in to thank my sponsors and supporters: Lindemann Engineering, Pilot, Cycle Gear for various and sundry supplies, and of course everyone at Roadracing World. Please consider a contribution to the Roadracing World Action Fund to help deploy more soft barriers.”

In the Bio section of his rider profile on roadracingworld.com, Gougis posted that he is “Editor at Large for Roadracing World & Motorcycle Technology. Professional business writer. Award-winning investigative reporter. Professor of journalism and mass media studies.” In the Style section of his rider profile, Gougis posted that his personal style is “Quiet Insanity.”
