Round 5 of the Law Tigers’ Sandia Motorcycle Roadracing Championships hosted by SMRI was held at Sandia Motor Speedway on Sunday August 20, 2017.

311 Mikey Shreve’s winning performances in Speedin’ Motorsports’ Unlimited Grand Prix, Expert Open Superbike, and Robert B. Gibson Auto Sales’ Expert Formula 1000 highlighted the weekend. Shreve’s fourth ULGP victory of the season catapulted him into a commanding 19 point lead in SMRI’s premiere class over nearest contender 11 Dave Dikitolia. 16 Kevin Gibson was also back in action after his unfortunate crash in July, finishing on the podium in both ULGP and Expert Formula 1000.

Novice racer 451 Richard Hernandez had his best race day of the year narrowly missing a victory in Desert Sky Ranch’s Novice Open Superbike to 314 Josh Hill due to a mechanical problem that forced him into second place, followed up by victories in Q-Realty’s Amateur Middleweight Superbike and HTW Racing’s Novice Middleweight Superbike. Hernandez appears to be well on his way to a white number plate for the 2018 season!

The closest race of the day came between 111 John Kynor Jr and 9 Scott Cloninger in Q-Realty’s Amateur 500 Supersport class. Kynor, aboard his KTM RC390, led the first 8 laps of the race, but bobbled the entry to Turn 3 on the ninth lap allowing just enough space for Ninja 250 mounted Cloninger to pass him for the lead. The two raced to the finish line where the final margin of victory was less than .001 seconds. Timing and Scoring officials used the order in which entries were recorded to the Timing and Scoring database to decide the victor, as total race times were identical for the two competitors to the thousandth of a second! Kynor holds a commanding 26 point lead in the class championship.

In Madd-1 Racings’ Novice Super Street new racer 434 John Hill claimed a share of the gold with a win in the second heat, tied with first heat winner, 627 Jaime Smith, who also set a personal best lap time in that event. Not only did the two riders share the top spot, but they’re also both mounted aboard Triumph Daytona 675 hardware. 447 Paul Ness finished a respectable third, and British Expat 007 Charlie Winckless also set a personal best lap in heat 1!
