Burke wins MRA Season Opener, Moham claims five track records

Fountain, CO – The Motorcycle Roadracing Association of Colorado opened their 45th championship race season at Pikes Peak International Raceway over the weekend of May 4-6. The three-day event featured all-day test & tune on Friday, sprint races Saturday & Sunday, and the first round of the MRA superstreet race introduction class on Saturday all held on the short 1.3 mile PPIR infield course.

Ryan Burke started the 2018 season a little back on his heels due to a mechanical problem with his Yamaha R1 that cropped up on Friday. Fortunately, Brian Sharp of Boulder Motorsports and fellow competitor Pat Lansu stepped up with a loaner Ducati Panigale for Burke to use for the weekend. Burke was able to get some very valuable seat time on Saturday by taking 2nd behind a hard riding Ray Thornton in the Open 30 minute solo endurance race.

Sunday’s premier event is Race of the Rockies and is run as a combined event with GTO and GTU categories scored separately. The race started & stopped twice with red flags before being able to run to completion. The perennial fast Ray Thornton unfortunately was a participant of the second red flag event by high siding his Yamaha R1 in the esses coming out of the infield.

On the third start of the GTO race, Brad Hendry put his BMW S1000RR in front of the field very closely followed by Burke, Brad Morris on his Yamaha R1, new MRA member Dough Frenchak also on a Yamaha R1. Frenchak has recently relocated to Colorado from Texas and is planning on running the entire MRA season.

It took 2 laps for Burke to get by Hendry to take the lead and never looked back. As seems to be his signature method of leading the race, Burke cut some quite fast lap times to shake off the competition and was never challenged again. Similarly, Morris took over second on the same lap and maintained that position for the 6 laps remaining of the shortened race. For the final podium position, Frenchak got by Hendry with 4 laps remaining.

In the GTU class, Sean Thomas got the restart hole shot over reigning RoR GTU champion Shannon Moham. Thomas and Moham had battled earlier in the weekend with Thomas getting the better of Moham in Middleweight & Heavyweight Supersport with Thomas taking the win in both of those classes. A determined Moham was able to turn the tables on Thomas early on Sunday by taking the win in Middleweight Superbike. So it was clear that a battle was set for RoR GTU.

Moham tailed Thomas for most of the restarted race trying to strategize a good passing location. Meanwhile Thomas was getting monster drives out of the infield and worked his way skillfully through traffic later in the race to hopefully get some distance from Moham. On the last lap, Moham managed to make his move to get around Thomas and took the GTU win with Thomas second, and Brian Dobrowolski third.

The true causality of the Moham and Thomas battle was a number of track records. Moham took the bulk of them with new PPIR records in Race of the Rockies GTU (0:57.399), Supertwins GTO (0:57.226), Formula 40 GTU (0:58.459), Thunderbike (0:58.768), and Middleweight Endurance (0:58.606). Thomas set a new track record in Lightweight Endurance (0:58.665). Additionally, Drew Jankord set a new mark in 400 Production Cup with a 1:04.565 and John McKown raised the bar in Amateur GTO with a 0:58.779 lap time.

Ryan Burke is supported by Imperial Sportbikes, Mark Schellinger from YCRS, Geoff Cesmat, Dunlop Tires, Boulder Motorsports, and all of his family.

Shannon Moham is sponsored by Nordic Nursing, Dunlop tires, Race Tech suspension, Woodcraft CFM, K&N Filters, Vortex, GPR dampers, Lockhart Phillips, Vickery Motorsports, Motors by REX, Renegade race fuels, Pit Bull stands, Imperial Sportbikes, Denver n Dakota, Segren’s Nectar, MOM, and Falicon crankshafts.

Round 2 of the MRA season will be at Pueblo Motorsports Park on June 2-3 including the MRA Superstreet program. More details are available at http://www.mra-racing.org/superstreet/superstreet-information/
