Ryan Burke & Shannon Moham dominate Race of the Rockies at Pueblo Motorsports Park

Pueblo, CO – On July 21 & 22, the Motorcycle Roadracing Association championship series returned to Pueblo Motorsports Park for a very hot weekend of sprint racing. Temperatures were over 102 degress F on Saturday and high 90’s on Sunday.

Starting the weekend for Race of the Rockies GTO, Ryan Burke had somewhat small 5 point lead over second place Doug Frenchak who, in turn, was 14 points clear of Brad Morris in third. For Race of the Rockies GTU, the top three order was more sorted with Shannon Moham leading Sean Thomas by 15 points, and Brian Dobrowolski back of Thomas by another 15 points.

Burke faced a mentally tough weekend with the absence of his strongest trackside supporter and mother Kathy Burke. Fortunately, his sister Lindsey, Mark Schellinger, and several family & friends were there to keep his mind focused as much as possible.

Burke started out the weekend on a good note by taking a tough win in Middleweight Supersport over Sean Thomas and Joe Resta. Two races later, Resta was able to get the better of Burke and Thomas by taking the win in Heavyweight Supersport under extremely hot track temperatures.

But the real game changer was to come in Open Supersport. While leading on lap 2, Doug Frenchak crashed in the notoriously fast Pueblo turn one. Frenchak was not severely injured, but his Yamaha YZF-R1 was completely destroyed, thus ending his weekend.

During Sunday’s morning RoR qualifying, Burke was able to grab the pole with a 1:29.793 with Dan Turner and Brad Morris rounding out the front row. Shannon Moham was able to beat up on most of the 1000’s by claiming fourth grid spot and the virtual pole for Race of the Rockies GTU.

Sunday afternoon Race of the Rockies saw Burke launch is Fox Performance sponsored Yamaha YZF-R1M to the front and never look back. As has been Burke’s strategy, he establishes the pace of the race early on and does his best to shake off the competition. Dan Turner briefly held second until lap 2 when Brad Morris got by him and tried to chase down a disappearing Burke. The three ended up Burke, Morris, and Turner for the Race of the Rockies GTO grid.

Race of the Rockies GTU turned out to be a mixed bike battle. Sean Thomas was able to get by Shannon Moham by lap 2, but Moham retook the position on lap 3 and was never challenged again. From then on, it became a mixture of Moham, Thomas with the GTO bikes of David Lambert, Mike Applehans, and Louis Ortiz mixing it up. The Pueblo track features a very long front straightaway where the GTU bikes usually fall prey to the open class machines. But there are ample technical sections on the second half of the track for the 600’s to make up time. In the end, Lambert was able to keep his modern vintage eligible Kawasaki ZX-10R ahead Louis Ortiz and tough man Mike Applehans who was racing with several injuries sustained in a mishap at High Plains Raceway a couple weeks earlier.

This was all to the annoyance of Sean Thomas, who worked his Yamaha YZF-R6 to the absolute limit to try to get around the bigger bikes for most of the race. Nonetheless, Thomas clearly took a hard fought second place for Race of the Rockies GTU with Brian Dobrowolski rounding out the podium.

Ryan Burke is supported by Imperial Sportbikes, Mark Schellinger from YCRS, Ben Fox of Fox Performance Engines, Dunlop Tires, and all of his family.

Shannon Moham is sponsored by Nordic Nursing, Dunlop tires, Race Tech suspension, Woodcraft CFM, K&N Performance, Vortex racing, GPR dampers, Lockhart Phillips, Vickery Motorsports, Motors by REX, Renegade race fuels, Imperial Sportbikes, Denver n Dakota, Segren’s Nectar, MOM, Falicon Crankshafts, and CP Carrillo.

For round 5, the MRA will be at High Plains Raceway over the weekend of August 11-12 and will be using the North Course configuration. The SuperStreet racing introduction class will be included on Saturday afternoon. More information on MRA SuperStreet is available at http://www.mra-racing.org/superstreet/superstreet-information/
