American Suzuki Vice President Mel Harris has told at least one AMA Superbike promoter that an MIC-organized U.S Superbike League will be announced today, with participation from Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki and Yamaha. “There was gonna be an announcement like now, but I haven’t seen it yet, that this was gonna be a series that would include the four major manufacturers with a series for 2009, running from April through August,” said George Bruggenthies, General Manager and CEO of Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin. Asked who would run the series, Bruggenthies said, “No idea. Supposedly it has TV, SPEED and Network, and I was told that I was gonna get a call from MIC President Tim Buche, which I have not gotten. “It’s really a shame,” continued Bruggenthies. “We need one series that includes the manufacturers. I talk to the fans and I know what they want, and the manufacturers and what they bring to an event is important. “I don’t know if it’s true (that a new MIC series will be announced) or not but it’s what I was told by Mel Harris,” Bruggenthies said. “I’m just passing it on so people could make their own decisions.” Asked about the historic split between IRL and CART in open-wheel car racing, Bruggenthies said, “I’ve been through that. It’s crazy. We know two series is not gonna be good for anybody. Eventually that will get corrected, but we don’t need 15 years of turmoil. I don’t want to be anybody’s enemy or have anybody mad at me, I just want to have a good sport.” Harris, who is slated to take early retirement from American Suzuki Motor Corp. at the end of 2008, has been a crucial factor in the company’s successful racing programs, including sponsorship of the annual AMA National at Road America.
