Young Takes Multiple Wins at Hallett Motor Racing Circuit with the CMRA

Brandon Young won the Formula 1 Expert race and logged two more podiums during the Central Motorcycle Roadracing Association’s (CMRA) event this past Sunday, September 20, at Hallett Motor Racing Circuit in Hallett, Oklahoma.

Heavy storms in the early morning hours made for cool weather with temperatures in the 60’s and wet, cold, and green track conditions greeted competitors on the 1.8-mile, 11-turn course.

Young rode his Metric Garage prepped, Pirelli-shod Suzuki GSX-R1000 for the fastest lap of the day on Lap 5 of the 212Decals.com – A Superbike Expert race, turning a 1:16.664. Young went on to take three podiums total, winning the Breast Cancer Research Foundation/P1 Racing – Formula 1 Expert, RaceworX – A Superstock Expert, and 212Decals.com – A Superbike Expert races. Combined with his Solo 30 Heavyweight Expert win from Saturday, Young went four for four for the weekend.

David Rice was the strongest in the Middleweights, taking three wins and an additional podium on his Kawasaki ZX-6R, winning South Central Race Center – C Superstock Expert, C Superbike Expert, B Superstock Expert, and taking second in B Superbike Expert.

The Breast Cancer Research Foundation/P1 Racing – Formula 1 Expert race promised to be exciting, as the track dried up and grip improved, so did lap times. Morning qualifying was cancelled due to the wet conditions, so the 14-bike grid was lined up according to points in class. For the start, Brandon Young had the pole with Craig Montgomery aboard his Suzuki GSX-R1000 in second and Bobby Davies on his Yamaha YZF-R6 completing the front row.

The starting lights went out, and Young went to work with Montgomery all over him like a cheap suit. Conner Blevins aboard a Kawasaki ZX636 and Cory Burleson on a Suzuki GSX-R600 shot up from the back of the grid to join the fray. Dustin Meador, also riding a Suzuki GSX-R1000 went at him hammer and tongs with Joseph Caruso on his BMW S1000RR, rounding out the front of the pack. Young ran a 1:16.900 for his fastest lap, holding off Montgomery as he answered with a 1:17.061 while Blevins put down the fastest lap of the race on Lap 10 with a 1:16.731. The racing stayed close, and as the final laps wound down, Young stretched his lead on Montgomery to 2.937 seconds at the checkers for the win. Montgomery crossed the line second, Blevins held onto third, Burleson fourth, Meador in fifth, and Caruso in sixth. Ron Mears, Bobby Davies, Gordon Miller, and Alonzo Contreras rounded out the top 10. Blevins also won the $100 P1 Racing cash purse for riding the first 600 across the finish line again during the Formula 1 race.

Robert Duncan got the Top Novice spot, with four wins in OnRoad OffRoad Suspension – A Superstock Novice, North Texas Superbikes – A Superbike Novice, SpeedFreakDecals.com – Formula 1 Novice and Formula 40 HW Novice on his Yamaha YZF-R1.

Shandra Crawford won the “Jennifer Millsap Get it Girl” $100 award, sponsored by A.G. Horn, for her combined finishes in four races on her Triumph Daytona 675R.

Of special note was the welcome visit by Tryg Westby. To everyone’s excitement, Tryg made the rounds of the paddock getting hugs, taking photos and offering up Dane T-shirts and decals. It was great to see him there!
