Red Bull Indianapolis GP honored as ‘Best Grand Prix’ by MotoGP

INDIANAPOLIS, Monday, Nov. 10, 2014 — The Red Bull Indianapolis GP was named by MotoGP as the circuit’s “Best Grand Prix” in 2014, the first North American race so honored.

“We’re delighted to be recognized by MotoGP. This award is a testament to our organization’s ability to host world-class events across all forms of motorsports,” said J. Douglas Boles, Indianapolis Motor Speedway president. “We’re looking forward to another great Red Bull Indianapolis GP in 2015.”

Selection criteria include venue, promotion and overall operations. IMS Senior Marketing Director Jarrod Krisiloff accepted the award on behalf of the Speedway on Sunday at the MotoGP season finale at Valencia, Spain.

The Red Bull Indianapolis GP began in 2008. After the 2013 event, IMS officials worked with series organizer Dorna Sports and worldwide governing body FIM to create a 16-turn, 2.591-mile circuit featuring exciting new turn configurations and braking zones. The entire infield section of the circuit was repaved, creating a more uniform, smooth racing surface.

The finished product delivered more passing opportunities and was widely praised by competitors including Marc Marquez, who won the event for the second consecutive year en route to his second world championship.

Red Bull Indianapolis GP week for the riders began at Bankers Life Fieldhouse for a MotoGP “cultural event.” At every stop during the racing season, riders are treated to a local attraction and for previous years of the event, that has meant visits to the Major Taylor Velodrome, Lucas Oil Stadium and other area landmarks.

For fans, the Red Bull Indianapolis GP is an entire weekend of celebrating the two-wheeled lifestyle. Downtown roared for the seventh consecutive year with the Indianapolis Motor Speedway’s Motorcycles on Meridian, a free event featuring hundreds of riders and motorcycles of all kinds. During the three days of on-track activity, a vendor marketplace in the infield at IMS featured aftermarket products for display and purchase plus gear from top motorcycle equipment and accessory companies.

The 2015 Red Bull Indianapolis GP will take place Aug. 7-9, the final racing event of the season at The Racing Capital of the World.
