Racer Brian J. Gibbs, 36, of Woodstock, Georgia, was arrested October 4 in a drug sting at a Hampton, Georgia motel near Atlanta Motor Speedway, authorities said. As part of an undercover operation, police asked Gibbs to deliver methamphetamine to a hotel room, according to Maj. Scott Ryals of the Flint Judicial Circuit Drug Task Force. At about 9:45 p.m., Gibbs, whose legal name is Joseph Brian Gibbs, and a female companion arrived on a 2006 Suzuki GSX-R1000 with about a half-ounce of methamphetamine, a scale and a 9mm pistol in a small tank bag, Ryals said. When Gibbs knocked on the door of the designated motel room, he was arrested, Ryals said. Gibbs, who raced a Hooters-sponsored Suzuki GSX-R600 in the AMA Formula Xtreme class during the 2007 season (and who was seen on The Crash Page in the November 2007 issue of Roadracing World magazine), was arrested on charges of possession of crystal methamphetamine with intent to distribute and possession of a firearm in the commission of a felony, Ryals said. County prosecutors had not determined at post time whether to file formal charges. When contacted by telephone at Griffin Suzuki Kawasaki in Griffin, Georgia, (the motorcycle dealership his family owns and operates), and asked about an arrest involving methamphetamines, Gibbs said, “I have no idea what you’re talking about,” and hung up. Roadracingworld.com delayed reporting the incident until obtaining verification that racer Brian J. Gibbs has the same birthdate and legal name as the Joseph Brian Gibbs arrested in the sting operation.
