DEVAAN AND SELLERS TAKE VICTORY IN THE CRA’S 3-HOUR TEAM CHALLENGE The Central Roadracing Association held round three of the 2013 season at Brainerd International Raceway’s Competition Course July 5-7, with the premier event of the weekend being the 3-hour Team Challenge. Pre-Race favorites, No Dak Oil BOOM (Aaron Anderson, Shane Keaveny, John Staska) and Team Worldwide (Drew See, Scott Stall, Pat Stewart) took their assumed positions at the front of the pack in the early laps, but as rain began to fall, the outlook of the race changed drastically. Keaveny slowed dramatically and fell to mid-pack while Stall continued to charge hard at the front. That decision would ultimately cost Team Worldwide a shot at the win as Stall tucked the front shortly after the rain began to fall harder on the South side of the track. Stall was one of four riders to sample Brainerd International Raceway’s improved runoff areas during the brief rain shower but that was of little solace to the Ankeny, Iowa rider. After the first of multiple rain showers had moved on and pit stops began, a new leader emerged in the form of Dirt Bags Ride On Top (Erik DeVaan, Chase Sellers). Sellers pulled out a significant lead when No Dak Oil Boom had a slow pit stop before sending out John Staska, and he continued to put in consistent, safe laps while other teams struggled. With Sellers and Staska and pitting, No Dak Oil Boom sent out Aaron Anderson to take the lead back from DeVaan. Anderson achieved his goal but unfortunately another rain shower came and caught out Anderson, causing him to crash hard under braking for the notoriously difficult turn 12 just one lap after he had taken the lead from DeVaan. With Anderson on the ground, No Dak Oil Boom fell down the order, joining Team Worldwide in the lower half of the top-10. With the favorites hitting difficulties, the top-5 was filled with some surprises. GP2 front-runners, Team Toby the Tortoise (Jonathan Champ, Luke Trombley, Drew Sivertsen), were circulating in second place overall for a short time as a result of the effort of Champ. The Goat Bros. (Michael Crotty, Harry Jensen, Jake Schmotter) eventually took over the runner-up position from Team Toby the Tortoise and held a comfortable lead over No Dak Oil Boom, who also pushed Team Toby the Tortoise down the order, until the late stages of the race. The rains weren’t content with the way the race was panning out and returned again, forcing No Dak Oil Boom rider John Staska to hit pit road shortly after they returned. Shane Keaveny was sent out on rain tires and began eating into The Goat Bros. advantage to the tune of 30 seconds per lap! While Dirt Bags Ride On Top held on to the lead by two laps, the gap between The Goat Bros. and No Dak Oil Boom dropped from more a lap to less than eight seconds at the end of the tension-filled race. The sprint races during the weekend saw some great battles between established front-runners. Kyle Knutson and Eric Fox continued their season-long battle at the front of the Lightweight Expert field, with both riders taking home two wins apiece. The Lightweight Novice saw a new challenger to top rider Kyle Dahl in the form of Luke Trombley. Trombley was able to chase down the talented Dahl and took the win after Dahl slowed with a mechanical. All signs point to some great future battles between Dahl, Trombley and Chris Henkel. The Middleweight and Heavyweight Expert classes were dominated by Farrell Performance rider Scott Stall, who won four out of six races, but the highlight of the weekend was seeing Drew See walk away from a vicious turn 12 highside. Young Gun Kyle Ohnsorg joined the Expert ranks and promptly won his first Expert race start, leading every lap in the process. TPL Racing rider Jordan Imrie was the only other rider to win in the Middleweight or Heavyweight Expert classes. Jake Schmotter won his share of Middleweight and Heavyweight Novice races as he took home four victories, with Brad Kreller taking two wins on his Triumph 675. The Unlimited class continued the theme from the previous round with Scott Stall trying to snatch victory from Bell Helmets rider Shane Keaveny. Stall, the current track record holder, was armed with his heavily outgunned GSX-R600 against Keaveny’s CBR1000RR, but Stall was able to run lap times less than a second off of Keaveny and put up a great fight, but Keaveny was able to remain undefeated in the Unlimited classes in 2013.
