KING OF THE MOUNTAIN MICHAEL DUNLOP WINS PRESTIGIOUS ISLE OF MAN SENIOR TT RACE

The dynamic partnership between Hawk Racing and Michael Dunlop once again proves they are a force to be reckoned with as Dunlop, onbaord his BMW machinery, returns to the top step of the podium for the Blue Riband race at the Isle of Man Tourist Trophy (TT).

Michael very quickly took the lead of the much anticipated race, setting a Senior race lap record of 133.256 on the opening lap of the 8.970 mile course. Leading the pack by 2.8 seconds ahead of rival Ian Hutchinson, Dunlop continued at the pace set earlier in the week with another sub 17 minute lap.

The 27 year old increased his lead by 6.907 over Hutcy as lap two took shape, keeping incredible speed and breaking yet more records with an outright lap record of 133.962 mph, 16:53.929 on his Hawk Racing BMW S 1000 RR.

The action didn’t stop there, as the miles were clocked up the #6 rider made clear his intentions charging ahead in lap four. A quick pit stop turnaround, 53.694, saw the Balleymoney Man increase his lead as he exited into the penultimate lap 15 seconds ahead by Glen Helen.

At the top end of the leader-board Michael charged on to take his 13th TT victory, with an incredible win to beat Ian Hutchinson by 31.476 seconds in the PokerStars Senior TT 2016 race. The start to finish winner also set a new race record time for a six lap race on the Mountain Course.

Michael Dunlop: “After Wednesday I was here to make amends. The boys behind me have worked hard, I have to take my hat off to Stuart and Steve. Steve made it easy for me, putting together a great package. What they do out of their workshop is incredible, they have had my back this year and I can’t fault them. Everything I wanted they gave me, everything I needed they had. The whole package worked. I get on well with them, its a small family and I just hope that my win is enough for them. All of them records in one race can’t be bad.”

Steve Hicken, Team Manager: “What a week of racing it has been here at the Isle of Man, you couldn’t write the action that takes place; this is why we race and why we love what we do. We were here for the top step of the podium and Michael has not only put us on the top step, but he has made history in the process with his impeccable skill and determination. Michael simply couldn’t have given us any more, he was on flying form, all of the hard work and preparations for this year have paid off. Racing is our passion and to know that our machinery has led to not only one, but two wins and several places in the records books is the icing on the cake. Once more may I thank all of the team and sponsors who have helped us to achieve these incredible results from TT 2016.”

Highlights from todays racing action we be broadcast on ITV4 at 22.15 this evening.

BAD LUCK SEES HICKMAN AND GBMOTO FORCED OUT OF PODIUM CONTENTION

10th June 2016 – Further bad luck struck the GBmoto/JG Speedfit Kawasaki team in this afternoon’s Senior TT race, with Peter Hickman forced to retire from a podium position towards the end of the second lap.

Despite fog delaying the day’s action, confidence was high for both Peter Hickman and the GBmoto/JG Speedfit Kawasaki entering the blue-riband Senior TT after Hicky set the third fastest time during qualifying. Starting fifth down the Glencrutchery Road, Hickman took a strong start to be running sixth at the opening checkpoint at Glen Helen. Moving up a position with every checkpoint, the star rider was sitting in third by the time they reached the Bungalow for the first time.

Maintaining third position into the second lap, he was able to pull away from fourth placed Anstey over the start of the lap before bad luck struck the start rider once again midway round the lap and he was forced to retire at Brandywell.

A disappointed Peter Hickman said, “It’s been a bit of a war of attrition this week across every class! It’s not been a bad TT, but it was certainly a very tough one. It’s my third year here and I was probably due a bit of a tough week as the first two years went with no problems. I’m disappointed but it’s just the way these things go – the team are still newcomers to the TT, but collectively we’ve all learnt a lot and have a really good setting with the bike as shown in that Senior race. My first lap was 131mph from a standing start, whilst in the Saturday Superbike race my flying lap saw us join the 132mph club so I can’t not be happy with that.

I want to say a big thanks to the whole team, as the work they’ve put in this week has been phenomenal and it’s no reflection on them that bad luck has stopped us from achieving what we were capable of. We move on and look towards heading back to the BSB scene before the Ulster in August.”

GBmoto Racing Team Principal Mark Smith-Halvorsen concluded, “After the effort the team has put in this week, to finish this way is gutting. The whole team has worked non-stop and unfortunately we weren’t able to achieve what we know we’re capable of. We can still take positives from this week, particularly with Peter’s performance in the Superbike race which saw him become the fourth ever fastest rider around the TT, whilst even in that Senior he was comfortably running in a podium position.”

Strong seventh place finish for Rutter in Senior TT

Michael Rutter wrapped up his highly successful campaign at the 2016 Isle of Man TT Races with seventh place in Friday’s Senior TT. It was the fourth top ten finish of race week for the Bathams/SMT Racing rider.

Morning mist caused the race to be delayed by over three hours and it was 3.45pm when it finally got underway. An opening lap of 129.698mph saw the Bridgnorth rider slot into 12th place but a slightly quicker lap second time around saw him move up a spot to 11th.

However, with an excellent pit stop by the team and the sixth fastest lap on the third lap, he jumped up inside the top ten to lie in eighth place at half race distance. A change in rear tyre helped Michael firmly get into his stride on the BMW S1000RR and his fourth lap of 130.680mph, his fastest of the race, enabled him to climb further still into seventh.

And with another 129mph+ lap on the sixth and final lap of the 37 and ¾-mile Mountain Course, he successfully held onto the position to make it four top ten finishes from the six races he started, DNFs coming in the first Supersport and Lightweight races. The result also meant he finished sixth overall in the Joey Dunlop TT Championship.

Michael Rutter: “It was a really hard race for the first two laps as we were running a rear tyre with a higher pressure than normal and it made the handling of the bike nowhere near where I needed it to be. I didn’t want to ride the bike but at the pit stop, we switched to a rear with lower pressure – and again at the second pit stop – and the bike just got better and better.”

“We were slightly overgeared so the bike wouldn’t pull sixth gear but I’m absolutely over the moon to get another top ten finish. I said before the fortnight that I’d be thrilled with top ten finishes so to end with four of them is brilliant – we’ve achieved everything and more. It’s been a long, hard two weeks and the team have been absolutely brilliant, working their socks off from start to finish so a massive, massive thank you to everyone connected with the Bathams/SMT Racing team.”

Michael now has a two-week break before resuming battle in the Pirelli National Superstock 1000 Championship at Knockhill on June 24-26.

McGuinness ends TT2016 with 46th podium

John McGuinness completed his 20th year at the Isle of Man TT races with his 46th podium finish as he swept to third place in Friday’s Senior race, repeating the result in the Superbike race at the beginning of the week.

Morning mist had seen the race delayed and it wasn’t until 3.45pm when it got underway and when it did, a relatively sluggish first lap of 130.293mph saw John in an unfamiliar ninth place. However, the second lap saw the Honda Racing rider get firmly into his stride and with a much better speed of 131.782mph he leapt up the order to fourth to put himself in contention for a podium finish.

Having been caught on the road by Ian Hutchinson, who was running in second place, and with yet another excellent pit stop, John took over third place from Bruce Anstey on the third lap and with his fourth lap of 132.584mph being only a fraction outside his personal best, he now had a firm grip on third place.

For the final two laps, John, Hutchinson and eventual race winner Michael Dunlop were circulating on the road together and with the gaps between them on corrected time all thirty seconds, the positions stayed the same for the remainder of the race. It all meant John crossed the line over 50 seconds clear of fourth placed Dean Harrison to claim his second podium finish of the week.

John McGuinness: “I was a bit lazy at the start even though in my head I felt like I was going reasonably well but when I saw ‘P9’ on my first board, I was beginning to think it wasn’t going to be my day. Hutchy came by me earlier than what he had done in last Saturday’s Superbike race but it woke me up and certainly helped tow me through the pack.”

“The team did two awesome pit stops again and I was able to take third half way through the race and consolidate the position from there on in. It’s always a relief to finish and I’m proud to be back on the podium with Michael and Ian again. Honda have a new Superbike coming out next year so I’ll have to come back for another go!”

DUNLOP DESTROYS LAP RECORD IN STUNNING POKERSTARS SENIOR TT VICTORY

Michael Dunlop shattered his own outright lap record in Friday’s Pokerstars Senior TT, the final race of the 2016 Isle of Man TT Races fuelled by Monster Energy, as the Hawk Racing BMW rider lapped at 133.962mph on his way to his 13th TT victory. In a repeat of Saturday’s RST Superbike race, Dunlop got the better of Ian Hutchinson and John McGuinness with his eventual winning margin a commanding 31.4s.

With morning delays, the race finally got underway at 3.45pm and at Glen Helen on the first lap, Dunlop had already established a healthy 1.8s lead over Hutchinson with Harrison a further 1.6s behind in third as Lee Johnston, Gary Johnson and Peter Hickman rounded out the top six, just six seconds covering the top ten.

Dunlop was really pressing on but having doubled his lead by the time they jumped Ballaugh Bridge, Hutchinson had reduced it again at Ramsey to 2.9s while Johnson moved up to third ahead of Hickman, Bruce Anstey and Dean Harrison.

With an opening lap speed of 133.256mph, Dunlop led Hutchinson by 2.8s with the leaderboard places behind the leading pair constantly changing. Hickman had moved into third, eight seconds down on Hutchinson, with fourth to sixth now seeing Anstey, Johnson and Harrison occupying the places.

Hutchinson grabbed the lead on the road on the second lap but he was unable to make any inroads into Dunlop’s time and all the way round the lap, the Ulsterman’s advantage grew. Indeed, with yet another new outright lap record of 133.962mph, Dunlop led his BMW rival by a commanding 9.2s as they made their first pit stop at the end of the lap.

There was change further behind though as Anstey moved up to third, albeit almost 26 seconds behind Hutchinson, after Hickman retired at Brandywell. John McGuinness, down in ninth at the end of the first lap, had jumped up the order to fourth with Harrison in fifth and Johnson now in sixth.

The pit stops saw Dunlop and Hutchinson maintain their first and second place positions but McGuinness’ crew again worked wonders and that helped him take over third by the time he reached Glen Helen on lap three, with the Morecambe man now some 6.7s clear of Anstey. Johnson’s good run ended though with a retirement at Appledene while David Johnson slid off the Norton at Sulby Bridge after posting a 130mph lap on his opening lap.

At half race distance, Dunlop had stretched out his lead slightly to 11.2s and now almost had Hutchinson in his sights on the road. McGuinness had also pulled away from Anstey with the difference between the two Honda riders having gone out to 11.8s. Harrison was holding station in fifth with Conor Cummins moving up to sixth.

Coming into the second pit stop and two-thirds race distance at the end of lap four, Dunlop still didn’t have full control of the race as the gap was still only 10.6s. Hutchinson and McGuinness were circulating on the road together and looked secure in second and third with the lower leaderboard places also becoming more settled, Anstey, Harrison and Cummins still occupying fourth to sixth.

Dunlop’s team got him in and out quicker than Hutchinson and his lead grew by an additional five seconds. Indeed, he now had him firmly in his sights on the roads and was able to ride accordingly for the final lap and a half, eventually overhauling both Hutchinson and McGuinness on the road too.

He eventually took the chequered flag from Hutchinson by over twenty seconds with McGuinness taking his 46th TT podium in third. Harrison grabbed hold of fourth on the penultimate lap from Anstey as Cummins, Rutter, Johnston, James Hillier and Ivan Lintin rounded out the top ten.

The results saw Hutchinson end with 115 points to be a comfortable winner of the Joey Dunlop TT Championship with Harrison second on 80 and Dunlop third with 70.

Meanwhile, Dan Hegarty was the first privateer to finish in an excellent 11th and that saw him clinch the TT Privateer’s Championship with 91 points to Jamie Coward’s 72.

Hillier ends TT2016 with another top ten finish

James Hillier and the Quattro Plant Muc-Off Kawasaki team ended their highly successful campaign at the 2016 Isle of Man TT races with a solid ninth place in Friday’s Senior race.

Morning mist led to the race being delayed by over three hours but it finally got underway at 3.45pm although it was clear from the opening lap that James wasn’t able to lap at his full potential, an opening lap of 130.365mph seeing him lie in eighth place.

Another lap in excess of 130mph second time around enabled him to maintain his eighth place but a problem with the rear suspension saw him up against it and he slipped back a place to third at half race distance.

Try as he might, the Hampshire rider was unable to lap any quicker and with the problems continuing throughout, he was unable to lap at the 132mph pace everyone knows he’s capable of and he had to settle for ninth place at the end of the six laps around the Mountain Course.

Nevertheless, it ensured both James and the team ended race week with a 100% finishing record, finishing all six of the races they started, five of which were in the top ten and three of which saw him on the podium. It all meant he finished fourth overall in the Joey Dunlop Championship.

James Hillier: “I did what I could today with what I had but I had a problem with the rear suspension from the off, which is a shame as the whole equipment has been superb all fortnight. It proved to be the hardest six-lap race I’ve ever had here and I nearly retired a few times but I was determined to finish and keep the team’s superb finishing record intact.”

“It’s not what I wanted as I obviously wanted to be challenging at the head of the field but it’s another top ten finish and I was desperate to keep that record going, not just for myself but also for the team. They’ve done a superb job all fortnight and it’s been another good race week with three podiums so we have to be happy.”

Pete Extance: “It’s a disappointing end to what’s been a great week for the Quattro Plant Muc-Off Kawasaki team and we had high expectations for the race, which unfortunately didn’t come to fruition. We had a damping issue with the rear of the bike and it’s a real shame as we’ve had fantastic set-up with the suspension all week. It was evident from the first lap but James rode a sensible race to bring the bike home for a creditable ninth place. With three podiums, a fourth and two more solid finishes, the team are happy and our 100% finishing record at the TT goes on.”

The team now have a two-week break before resuming their British Superbike, Supersport and Sidecar Championship challenges with Luke Mossey, Filip Backlund, Andrew Reid and Ricky Stevens/Ryan Charlwood.

Impressive ride as John McGuinness takes Senior TT third place

Isle of Man TT

Snaefell Mountain Course, Isle of Man

Today the 2016 Isle of Man TT races concluded with an epic six-lap race for the Senior TT. Honda Racing’s John McGuinness secured his second podium of the week, placing his Honda CBR1000RR Fireblade SP on the podium in third place. While team-mate Conor Cummins came home sixth.

With delays to the race programme following fog across the island in the morning, the Senior TT finally got underway at 1545. First away on the road with the number one plate was McGuinness, but after the first lap he was sitting ninth.

Coming into the first pit stop at the end of the second lap, McGuinness had moved into seventh place, however a superb stop from the super-slick Honda crew saw McGuinness out of the pits first and by Glen Helen he’d moved into third place.

Chipping away and making up time on his CBR machine the ‘Morecambe Missile’ comfortably settled into the third place spot. During the second pit stop McGuinness and his crew pulled back a blinding eight seconds.

The remainder of two laps saw the Honda-man push away over the 37.73-mile Mountain circuit and on the final lap he was fastest from Glen Helen to Ballaugh, two seconds under the leading rider. McGuinness crossed the finish line after six laps to claim his second podium of the week and 46th TT podium of his career. Michael Dunlop took the Senior TT win, with Ian Hutchinson in second place.

Team-mate Cummins enjoyed a good race over the six laps. Starting on the road tenth, the local lad was sitting 12th after the first lap. Pushing away, making up time and after a good pit stop from his crew at the end of the second lap he’d moved into sixth place. Keeping his pace over the remainder of the race the ‘Ramsey Rocket’ settled into sixth, where he crossed the line.

Neil Tuxworth

Team Manager

It’s been another successful day for the team with John taking his second third place finish on the podium this week, which is realistically the best we could have expected with the times the others were putting in. So we’re happy with that and he went quicker round the TT circuit than he has done previously, so I know he’s happy about that. It’s great for Conor after the Superbike race last weekend that he finished in sixth place, and with Bruce finishing also in the top six there were three Honda’s at the front. So all in all it’s been a successful day for Honda and especially the Honda Racing team.

John McGuinness 1

This is my 20th TT and I remember going down Bray Hill on my little 250 Honda. I never thought I’d be back on the podium with my 46th podium 20 years later. I’ve seen all sorts of things, come across great riders and been in fantastic races. Last year I was sat in the middle but this year it’s Michael and Hutchy and I know how hard it is. The Fireblade was great and never missed a beat. I was probably a little steady at the start and by my first pit stop was P9 and I thought it definitely was time to hang my boots up, but then Hutchy came past and I managed to get a tow and learn some things off these guys about how to ride even faster round here. My crew were stunning in the pits; they did a fantastic job for me both times. It’s been a tough year and it has been hard, but I always enjoy coming here and riding, and to walk away with two podium finishes is great!

Conor Cummins 10

We’re at the end of the TT fortnight and it’s been a challenging one, but I’ve also had a great time riding the Fireblade again here. I’ve had some good, consistent results and been chipping away at my times and speeds. We’ve had some ups and downs and have been trying a few different things to make improvements over the week and today finishing sixth, I think we’re nearly there, but we do have some small things to work on just to make it all a bit better and get further towards the front. A huge thanks to my team who has worked so hard over the TT to build me a great package and also to Honda Racing and my sponsors for their support.

Lintin and Devitt RC Express end 2016 TT with top ten finish

Ivan Lintin and the Devitt RC Express Racing team concluded their campaign at the 2016 Isle of Man TT races in fine style on Friday afternoon with an excellent tenth place in the Senior TT.

Mist on the island led to the race being delayed by over three hours, eventually getting underway at 3.45pm, but when it did, the Lincolnshire rider set off at an excellent pace and with his opening lap being 127.909mph, he slotted into 14th place.

Another 127mph lap second time around enabled Ivan to hold onto 14th place but a rapid pit stop saw him jump up three places to 11th at half race distance. A new personal best lap of the Mountain Course on the fourth lap, 127.948mph, meant he still lay in 11th place but with Steve Mercer being forced to retire, he was promoted up the order to tenth with two laps to go and he successfully saw out the race to claim a superb top ten finish.

Team-mate Alan Bonner was also back in action and with a lap in excess of 125mph, he slotted into 22nd place at the end of the first lap. This was where he stayed until lap three when he moved up three places to 19th but all hopes of a top 15 finish ended on the fifth lap when he missed his braking marker at the Creg ny Baa and crashed out at little more than 10mph, fortunately without injury.

Ivan Lintin: “I’ve got to be happy with a top ten finish in the Senior TT! I didn’t quite lap as fast as I would have liked but still set a new personal best and was consistently in the 127mph bracket so it’s a good way to end this year’s TT. I had a pretty steady race and could see Steve and Martin Jessopp in front of me, eventually getting by Martin and the team did a mega job in the pits again. I can’t fault the week and obviously the Lightweight win was the highlight but I’ve been happy with all my rides and results.”

Alan Bonner: “It’s been one of those TT’s for me and lady luck’s just not been on our side but fair play to the whole Devitt RC Express Racing team, they’ve done everything they could for me this fortnight. The bike was getting better all the time and even at the pits we made some changes which helped even more but I was a bit lazy on the brakes going into the Creg and ended up hitting the bales at about 10mph and toppling over. It hasn’t been my TT but well done to Ivan and thanks again to the whole team and my personal sponsors for making it all possible.”

Ben Constable, Team Co-owner: “We’re chuffed to bits with Ivan’s top ten finish and it’s rounded off a good week for him and the team. He set a new personal best lap and when you look at the names of the riders who finished ahead of him, he’s in some illustrious company. The team did a great job in the pits with both Ivan and Alan and it’s just a shame Alan had his little off as a top 15 finish was within his grasp. Luck’s been against him this week but he’ll bounce back stronger. It’s been a massive team effort this fortnight and I can’t thank the boys enough for all their hard work.”

The team now head to Scarborough for the Cock o’ the North road races on June 18-19.
