Dry weather and high temperatures made for exciting racing at round 3 of the Vortex Masters of the Mountains race series hosted by the Utah Sport Bike Association at Miller Motorsports Park. Round three was held on Miller’s technical East Course configuration which challenges racers with a little bit of everything from fourth gear sweepers to decreasing radius bends.

Saturday afternoon’s racing started off with what is quickly becoming the most attended race of the weekend, Time Attack with over 40 racers signed up to do battle.

“Time Attack has been a huge success this season,” explained Director of New Racers, Brian Childree. “The race starts and rather than a set amount of laps there is a set time that is only known by race direction. Once the race timer reaches the predetermined time the checkered flag goes out and the next racer to cross it wins and gets the purse. It’s a really cool race because it gives everyone a reason to go out and battle rather than settle for position because every group on track could be fighting for the win!”

Sunday afternoon opened with the premier middleweight class, King of the Mountain GTU. Brian Childree got the holeshot from pole position and led the field which being closely followed by Kinzer Naylor. Lap after lap the two of them rode at a blistering pace that no one else could match, Childree leading with Naylor in tow. On the final lap of the race the two leaders caught a lapped rider in the critical Tooele Turn with Childree losing out. Naylor took advantage and passed Childree on the straight heading into Clubhouse Corner and went on to win the race. A thrilling end to an exciting race.

Next up was King of the Mountain GTO. The grid was larger than usual with several racers coming from out of state to do battle in the premier class. The race started with a jump start from Michael Bradshaw which resulted in a ride through penalty effectively ending his chance at the win. From then on the current and three-time King of the Mountain GTO champion Oleg Pianykh defended his lead and went on to take the win.

“Overall it was a great weekend,” said Pianykh. “We made a lot of progress with the Yamaha and I’m starting to feel really comfortable on it. It’s great to see a lot of fast guys come out and race, makes the races really enjoyable. Big thanks to CTR Suspensions for helping get the bike dialed, the whole MotoStation team for making this possible and my mechanic Rick for working his ass off all weekend. Pirelli tires were incredible and Galfer brakes got the job done.”
