PASCARELLA TAKES HIS FOURTH PREMIER CLASS WIN OF THE SEASON

June 20-21 saw the Return of the CT Racing Pirelli/GPR/GoPro AFM series to Thunderhill Raceway in Willows, CA. Once again, the action fell perfectly between the heat spells and the track was in near ideal condition for two days of racing.

In the previous round, Joey Pascarella was disqualified at the track from the Formula Pacific race, handing the win to former #1 plate holder Cory Call. After a review by the AFM board, the on-track decision was reversed and Pascarella was reinstated as the winner. With this development, Pascarella entered the round as an undefeated leader in Formula Pacific.

In between the rounds, Pascarella was offered a ride on Lenny Hale’s 2015 Yamaha YZF-R1. Pascarella quickly adapted to the big bike, edging out Chris Siglin and his BMW S1000RR in the Fastline Cycles OpenGP race. Pascarella wasn’t the only one busy in the down time between the rounds, as Cory Call’s S1000RR emerged from the short break with key upgrades. The dynamic of the Dunlop Race Tire Service Formula Pacific Race was set to go up a notch with the new hardware on the grid.

As the bikes slotted into their spots for the Dunlop Race Tire Service Formula Pacific Race, Pascarella’s bike was distinguishable with the gray primer on the just prepared bike. The flag dropped and immediately Pascarella got a great launch, but Chris Siglin flew through the gears perfectly as he pulled up next to Pascarella going into turn 1. Siglin appeared to have a small issue that had a big impact on his drive out of turn 1 as he went a little wide and Daytona Anderson, astride a Suzuki GSXR-1000, Deion Campbell on his Yamaha YZF-R6 and Cory Call slipped underneath him. The riders streamed into turn 2 and Call went on the attack, swinging around all but Pascarella on the outside of the long left hand corner. Siglin immediately recovered from his misstep in turn1 and fought his way into the top four within a half a lap.

The four up front, Pascarella, Call, Campbell and Siglin, quickly formed a break away, all dropping into the 1:48s. Call started to test Pascarella in several corners, while Siglin tightened up on Campbell. At the end of the third lap, Siglin set up for a great drive on the front straightaway, passing both Campbell and Call. Call immediately countered on the exit to turn 1 and set his sights back on Pascarella again. The race continued in this order and a Pascarella dropped to a mid-1:47 while forming a slight gap to Call. Siglin continued to try to work his way up to Call; however, he had to hold off the hard charging Campbell, who was determined to secure the last spot on the box. Campbell managed to briefly get around Siglin on the sixth lap and this seemed to give Siglin the extra drive to not only get back past Campbell, but to quicken the pace so another pass attempt would not be possible. As the riders entered the last lap, the order seemed to be a foregone conclusion. Regardless, Siglin strung the corners together perfectly and came within striking distance right as the checkered flag dropped. Pascarella stood on top of the Formula Pacific Podium for the fourth time this year, with Call in second and Siglin in third.

Campbell’s inspired ride in Formula Pacific did not yield a podium and the 600 rider was able to take comfort of his sweep of Lagunitas Brewing Formula 1, Mach 1 Morotsports 600 SuperBike, Keigwin’s at the Track 600 Production, Racer Gloves 750 SuperBike and the Moto Shop SF 750 Production classes.
