STACKED FORMULA PACIFIC RACE DELIVERS AT BUTTONWILLOW

Buttonwillow Raceway Park hosted the final round of the AFM Series on the weekend of October 22-23. The stage was set for a classic showdown in the Dunlop Race Tire Services Formula Pacific race, but the week leading up to the race would prove to add a level of drama and chaos that could not have been predicted.

There were just six points separating Joey Pascarella from Wyatt Farris for the number one plate after the action packed round six. Farris could take the plate from the defending Pascarella; however, he would not only need to cross the finish line in front, he would need to put at least a rider between them. The entry list favored this possibility, with guest appearances from a handful of reciprocity riders, including MotoAmerica Superstock 600 Champion Bryce Prince and Daytona 200 winner Steve Rapp. The guest racers were not the biggest variable heading into the weekend, though.

Days before the race weekend, the trailer that was transporting Pascarella’s Kawasaki ZX-10, along with the bike of multi-class champion Lenny Hale, was involved in a multi-vehicle pile up. The accident left the trailer upside down and buckled, with the bikes inside supporting the frame of the trailer. An effort to extract the bikes from the wreck and repair them for the weekend went into high gear.

Saturday was used for practice and qualifying and would quickly reveal two things: Pascarella’s bike was up to the task and Prince was there to win. The race, originally slated for 12 laps, was also bumped up to 15 laps per a racer vote at the rider’s meeting.

19 racers gridded up for the final race of the year. When the green flag dropped, Pascarella charged to Turn One in first place, only to be overtaken by Prince on his Yamaha YZF-R1 in the back section of the track. Rapp, riding his recently converted streetbike, an Aprilia RSV4, was working his way up through the grid. At the end of the first lap, it was Prince leading Pascarella. Devon McDonough and Wyatt Farris, both on Kawasaki ZX-10Rs followed while Rapp crossed in fifth. Chris Siglin, astride his BMW S1000RR, rounded out the top 6.

Rapp worked his way into third place and formed part of the three-bike breakaway up front as Prince, Pascarella and Rapp all dipped into the 1:44s. Lap after lap, the leaders raced close together with Prince showing the way. On lap five, Pascarella passed Prince to take the lead while Siglin worked his way around McDonough to take fifth on the next lap. Siglin, with McDonough in tow, would stalk Farris for the next four laps, finally overtaking him on lap 10. Back up front, the order was still Pascarella, Price and Rapp until Pascarella ran a little wide, allowing Price to retake the lead on lap 11. Siglin and Farris continued to battle it out for fourth place, with Farris taking back the position on lap 13, only to have Siglin take it back the next lap. Meanwhile, Cory Call, who had been pacing in seventh place on his BMW S1000RR, started to pick off riders and join into the battle for fourth.

On the final lap, Pascarella built upon a great drive out of Turn Seven to make a pass into Turn Nine. With only the esses and Turn 11 left to go, Pascarella put the hammer down and took the checkered flag for the win. Prince followed closely behind and then Rapp in third. Siglin fought off Call to secure fourth place while McDonough edged out Farris for sixth place.

With the victory, Pascarella successfully defended his #1 plate
