Ortt Takes Home Five Podiums at NOLA with CMRA

Fifteen-year-old racer, Braeden Ortt, grabbed five podiums during the Central Motorcycle Roadracing Association’s (CMRA) fourth round of sprint races this past Sunday, June 21. A second day of soupy humid heat with temperatures in the 90’s greeted competitors from as far away as Florida, Iowa, and Mexico City as the lap times stayed fast on the 2.75 mile, 16-turn course at NOLA MotorSports Park in Avondale, Louisiana.

Ortt took two wins aboard his Pirelli-shod Yamaha YZF-R6, including a thrilling win in the premier Breast Cancer Research Foundation/P1 Racing – Formula 1 Expert. His other podiums included the win in Rookie Expert Heavyweight, second in RaceworX – A Superstock Expert, B Superbike Expert and third in C Superbike Expert. Ortt also won the $100 P1 Racing cash purse for riding the first 600 across the finish line during the Formula 1 race.

James Camacho Jr. turned the fastest lap of the day on his Dunlop-shod Yamaha YZF-R6, turning a blazing 1:45.429 on Lap 2 in B Superstock Expert. Camacho went on to snag four podiums total, winning South Central Race Center – C Superstock Expert, B Superstock Expert, B Superbike Expert, and taking second in C Superbike Expert.

The Breast Cancer Research Foundation/P1 Racing – Formula 1 Expert race promised to be a thriller, with morning qualifying having competitors only tenths of a second apart. Ty Howard ran a 1:46.368 aboard his bone stock KTM 1290 Super Duke to snag the pole on the 18-bike grid. The start lights went out and Howard put his head down to grab the lead. Braeden Ortt and his Yamaha YZF-R6 was right on his heels with Brandon Young in pursuit. Howard crushed Lap 2 with a 1:46.450, turning the fastest lap of the race. Ortt answered with a 1:46.780 while Young hung in with a 1:46.966. Jeff Wrobel, riding a Suzuki GSX-R1000 tangled with Bobby Davies on a Yamaha YZF-R6 turning a 1:47.385 to Davies’ 1:47.856, and taking over fourth. As the final laps wound down, Howard and Ortt went at it hammer and tongs, with less than a bike length between them. As their game of pass and pass back went on, Howard held the lead the entire race. Going into the final corner, Howard had the edge by 0.750 of a second and charged the front straight for the finish. Ortt came onto the front straight for the final time and buried his throttle, catching Howard at the line in a photo finish. Ortt nipped Howard at the line, taking the win by 0.005 of a second. Young crossed the line third, Wrobel held fourth, and Bobby Davies in fifth.Joseph Caruso, Alonzo Contreras, Craig Montgomery, Alan Phillips, and Brady Ipock rounded out the top 10.

Jacob Napier took the Top Novice spot again, going five for five as he rode his Suzuki GSX-R750 to the wins in SpeedFreakDecals.com – Formula 1 Novice, OnRoad OffRoad Suspension – A Superstock Novice, North Texas Superbikes – A Superbike Novice, Lone Star Track Days – B Superstock Novice, and North Texas Superbikes – B Superbike Novice.

Shandra Crawford won the “Jennifer Millsap Get it Girl” $100 award, sponsored by A.G. Horn, for her combined finishes in four races.
