Beaubier Reigns In The Rain At New Jersey, While Hayes Takes Over The Reins In The Championship

Millville, NJ – May 1, 2016 – Damp conditions at New Jersey Motorsports Park did nothing to dampen the spirits of the Monster Energy/Graves/Yamaha Factory Racing team. In fact, it was quite the opposite as defending MotoAmerica Superbike Champion Cameron Beaubier got the double win in New Jersey and four-time AMA Superbike Champion Josh Hayes finished second in both Superbike races, which moved Josh to the top of the 2016 Superbike Championship points standings. Meanwhile, Cameron made a huge jump in the standings after a rough start to his Superbike title defense, moving from seventh to second position on the strength of his two New Jersey victories.

Sunday’s Superbike Race 2 was very much like Race 1 earlier in the day, except that Cameron got the holeshot from the pole position that he earned in Superpole on Saturday, and he was never headed from start to finish. Josh was immediately in second when the race went green, and he also maintained his position all the way to the checkers. Both races were run in wet conditions, although the rain had stopped falling just prior to the start of race two.

“At the beginning, I was kind of stressed out because I thought I was riding better in the second race,” Cameron said. “But then, I saw ‘+0’ on my pitboard, and I said, ‘Oh, no.’ But, I just tried to be smooth, and I was able to stretch out the lead as the laps wound down.

“This weekend, for both Josh and me, has been great because it’s been a huge recovery in points for us. Now, we are one and two in the Championship, which is a great place to be at this point in the season.”

“I can’t say there are too many times where I’ve wanted to settle for second, but for that race, I guess I did…at least a little bit,” commented Josh. “Cam rode a really good race, just like he did in the first one. Sometimes, you have to take what you can get in these things. I’m happy to be in first place in the points, and it’s great to have us 1 and 2 in the Championship, especially after how things have gone for us so far this year.”

The Monster Energy/Graves/Yamaha Factory Racing team will race again in two weeks as the MotoAmerica Championship will be at VIRginia international Raceway for the Yamaha Superbike Challenge of Virginia on May 13 – May 15.
