“Beaubier The Brat” Wins Superbike Race 1 At Road America; Monster Energy/Graves/Yamaha Teammate Hayes Finishes Sixth

Elkhart Lake, WI – May 31, 2015 – Under bright, sunny skies in Wisconsin’s “bratland,” Monster Energy/Graves/Yamaha rider Cameron Beaubier rode a perfect race in MotoAmerica Superbike Race 1 to notch his fourth victory of the season. The 22-year-old Californian started from second on the grid, was able to get by his teammate Josh Hayes, and rode flawlessly all the way to the checkered flag, successfully holding off the hard-charging Roger Hayden and Jake Lewis.

Josh, the four-time and defending AMA Superbike Champion, started from the pole, got the holeshot and led the first four laps on the way to what looked to be another victory for the man with 51 career Superbike wins. But, on lap five, he had a moment, which turned into a bigger moment, which resulted in a tipover. Josh quickly got his #1 R1 upright and rolling again where he commenced to catching and passing all but seven riders on the track by the time he crossed the finish line. With one Superstock 1000 rider (R1-mounted Jake Gagne) in the top seven, Josh was credited with sixth-place in the Superbike class.

“The wind was tough out there,” Cameron commented after his win. “I knew going into today that the race was going to be interesting because we hadn’t been able to get in very many dry laps this weekend with all the rain. Josh got a good jump on us, and I was afraid he was going to get away. But, I ran some fast laps, caught up to him, and was able to get by him. I feel bad that he fell down, but I’m glad he’s OK, and he’ll be a factor, for sure in Race 2 later today.”

After the race, Josh talked about his incident and said, “It was not a lot different than most of those moments you have in practice and qualifying. The bike started swapping ends, and I thought I had it controlled. Fortunately, when I went down, the bike stayed on one side, and the damage was minimized. I was able to pick it up and keep going. My first priority was to evaluate if I could ride the bike or not. You want to make sure you have brakes, and figure out what you can do and what you can’t. The bodywork damage affected the aerodynamics a little bit, especially with the wind, but I was able to still run some pretty decent laps. I caught a lot of the field in about two laps, but I just ran out of time. I feel fortunate that I was able to finish sixth, though, and salvage that many points.”
