Competition Gets Tough During WERA National at Summit Point

SUMMIT POINT, W. Va. The competition in the WERA National Series has been close this year, and round seven at Summit Point Raceway featured some of the closest racing yet.

During the six-hour WERA Dunlop National Endurance Series race on Saturday, August 6, Vesrah Suzuki won for the first time in three races with Tray Batey and John Jacobi finishing three laps ahead of the field. The race was in its fourth hour before Vesrah was able to build up a full lap over the rest of the competitors.

Team Velocity Racing finished second, riding to their fifth consecutive Heavyweight Superstock win at the hands of Chuck Ivey, Reuben Frankenfield and Mark Crozier.

Red Star finished third overall and first in Mediumweight Superbike with William Lindsay, Ben Thompson, Brett Champagne and Joe Prussiano. Their victory has put them into the class points lead over Army of Darkness.

Dalke Motorsports’ sixth place finish gave them the Mediumweight Superstock win with riders Josh Smith-Moore, Brian Dalke, Giovanni Rojas and Keith Marshall. The Notorious P.I.G. led Lightweight Superbike from start to finish with Nolan Ballew, Stephen Bacon, Melissa Berkoff and Chris Ecklund.

Sunday’s WERA Michelin National Challenge Series expert division sprint races were dominated by Vesrah Suzuki’s Tray Batey, who won Formula 1, 750 Superstock and Heavyweight Twins Superstock. Batey also set a new track record of 1:14.085 during Formula 1.

Fifteen-year-old Josh Herrin came away with the win in both 600 Superstock and 600 Superbike. Dave Yaakov also took two wins, running away with the Lightweight Twins Superstock and Formula 2 victories.

XT Racing’s David Weber dominated Open Superstock, and RacerSupply.com’s Ben Thompson won 750 Superbike.

In the novice division, two riders each earned three wins. Charlie Coleman was at the front of Open Superstock, 750 Superstock and 750 Superbike. Sean Marston won Heavyweight Twins Superstock, Lightweight Twins Superstock and Formula 2.

Local racer Jeremy Helbing won the 600 Superstock novice race and J.B. Layman won 600 Superbike.

The WERA National Series will have a break of just two weeks before round eight at Talladega Gran Prix Raceway.

More, from a press release issued by Bell’s ARNCHU Racing:

Round 7: Dunlop/WERA National Endurance Series at Summit Point, August 6, 2005

Bell’s ARNCHU Racing: 4th overall, solid performance despite electrical problem.

Relative newcomer, Bell’s ARNCHU Racing looked to take their third overall podium position in as many races, but an electrical malfunction caused by a fuel injection control component relegated the team to 4th overall. The team still managed to take a 2nd in class and posted the 3rd fastest team lap. The 6 hour event was stopped during the first hour for 67 minutes for a red flag.

After solid rides from all 3 riders, Randy Sherman took the controls for the last stint in P5. We knew the teams in P4 and P3 would need to pit, so we figured that we were safe, as Randy only had to make up about 30 seconds in one hour. Randy rode strong and chipped away the time up to P3, but the bike began to lean out and stutter and Randy was unable to pull full throttle. As soon as Randy was close the bike would falter, which made for a dramatic finish with Redstar and ARNCHU nose to tail at the finish.

Bell’s ARNCHU Racing is a close 5th behind the Army of Darkness after 7 rounds. For the complete story, visit ~http://www.arnchu.net~
