PICOTTE CLOSES ON TITLE

MONT-TREMBLANT, QC Pascal Picotte edged closer to his second straight Parts Canada Superbike Championship by claiming pole position for the seventh round at Circuit Mont-Tremblant on Saturday.

The Granby, QC racer shattered his previous track record with a time of 1:38.930 around the 2.65-mile circuit on his Team Yamaha / Picotte Performance Yamaha YZF-R1. The old mark was a 1:40.240.

The performance gave Picotte his fourth MPM Array Pole Award in the Superbike class this year and four more points toward the Parts Canada Superbike title. He now leads the standings with 291 points, 74 more than second place Kevin Lacombe. Lacombe, also from Granby added one point to his total by qualifying fourth for Sunday’s race on the Lacombe Racing/Brooklin Cycle Yamaha YZF-R1 at 1:40.315.

This weekend’s event is the penultimate round in the eight-race Parts Canada Superbike title chase and Picotte can sew up the title if he leaves Mont-Tremblant with a points lead of 56 or greater. A race win is worth 50 points with an additional two points going to the rider who leads the most laps.

“We set a good time right off the bat with our race set up that we are going to use tomorrow and we did a 39.2, so I was pretty satisfied, and then Steve [Crevier] set a 39.3 after that,” Picotte said.”We tried a softer tire to see if it would make a difference, and it did – we picked up a couple of tenths.”

Maple Ridge, BC’s Crevier qualified second for Sunday’s race with a time of 1:39.319 on his DXS Diablo Racing Team Suzuki GSX-R1000 and Jordan Szoke of Brantford, ON placed third at 1:40.191 riding the Honda Canada / Fast Company Honda CBR1000RR.

Szoke is now three points behind Lacombe in third place in the Parts Canada Superbike standings with 214 while Crevier moved up to fourth in points with 171.

In other action at Circuit Mont-Tremblant, Picotte extended his lead in the Hindle Exhaust Pro 600 Sport Bike Championship standings by snatching pole position for Sunday’s race with a time of 1:41.964 on his Yamaha YZF-R6. The effort came in the final minute of the session.

Picotte’s time just edged the Suzuki GSX-R600 of Crevier, who settled for second at 1:41.998. Rock Forest, QC’s Francis Martin will start third after recording a 1:42.278 on his Canadian Kawasaki Motors Kawasaki ZX-6RR.

Opening round winner Thomas Macsanszky of Richmond Hill, ON grabbed pole for the International Motorcycle SUPERSHOW Amateur 600 Sport Bike race at Mont-Tremblant with a time of 1:47.147 on his Yamaha YZF-R6.

Points leader Rudy Raposo of Mississauga, ON placed seventh on his Yamaha at 1:48.745.

Feature races in all three national classes will take place Sunday. Practice starts at 9:00 a.m. with the first race set to go at 12:30 p.m.

This weekend’s event will be televised on TSN on Oct. 10 at 1:00 p.m. EDT and on Quebec’s RDS on Oct. 23 at 2:00 p.m. EDT. The action will also appear in one-hour format this fall on TORONTO1 and A-Channel stations in Winnipeg, Calgary and Edmonton.
