Yoshimura Suzuki’s Mat Mladin went no faster in the final AMA Superbike qualifying session Saturday morning at Road America, but the five-time and defending AMA Superbike Champion did not need to. His lap record time of 2:12.554, set during Friday’s qualifying session, held on to the pole position, his sixth consecutive pole position of the 2005 season and the 43rd of his career. Mladin’s teammate Ben Spies improved his time from 2:14.542 on Friday to a 2:13.346 on Saturday, moving him from fourth to second on the grid for this weekend’s Superbike double-header. Spies gave credit for his improvement to changes his team made to his bike overnight. Aaron Yates also improved Saturday, turning a 2:14.236 on his Yoshimura Suzuki GSX-R1000, which earned him the third spot on the front row. American Honda’s Miguel Duhamel slipped from third to fourth in spite of going slightly quicker Saturday with a 2:14.390. Parts Unlimited Ducati Austin’s Eric Bostrom, Attack Kawasaki’s Josh Hayes, American Honda’s Jake Zemke and Bostrom’s teammate Neil Hodgson held their respective spots on the second row. Erion Honda’s Kurtis Roberts chopped a second off his time Saturday morning, elevating him from 12th to ninth on the grid. Provisional Combined AMA Superbike Qualifying Results: 1.
