Six-time and defending AMA Superbike Champion Mat Mladin came away from a two-day AMA team test at California Speedway with the fastest lap time. After spending most of the test evaluating new parts back-to-back with 2005-spec parts, Mladin made his first set-up change to his Yoshimura Suzuki GSX-R1000 late Wednesday afternoon, just before he ripped off a lap at 1:24.448. “I made a couple of changes and dropped down (my lap time) there at the end, but I didn’t do anything too silly,” said Mladin, whose fastest race lap at California Speedway in 2005 was a 1:24.562. “I just wanted to see what the bike was capable of, and it felt pretty good. It was a good test for us.” The second-fastest rider at the test and the only other rider in the 1:24 bracket was Parts Unlimited Ducati Austin’s Ben Bostrom, who lapped the 2.36-mile infield road course in 1:24.983 on his factory 999 Superbike. “I didn’t ride very much today,” said Bostrom. “I think the big thing was seat time on the bike. As you gain seat time, you accidentally go quicker and quicker. We only made very small changes, but it’s not the bike. Honestly, it’s the rider having to adapt to the bike.” The test was Bostrom’s first since the Dunlop tire test at Daytona and his first ride since breaking several ribs in a snowboarding accident over the Christmas holidays. Bostrom said his ribs have healed completely. Graves Motorsports Yamaha’s Jason DiSalvo turned the fastest Superstock lap time of the test, a 1:25.583 on his YZF-R1 LE, right before he crashed in turns 5-6. DiSalvo was uninjured in the lowside fall. Team M4 EMGO Suzuki’s Michael Barnes fell earlier (without injury) in the same corner when he pushed the front of his Formula Xtreme-spec GSX-R600. Barnes said he and his team made a lot of progress over the two-day test. This California Speedway test was the last for many of the AMA teams before heading to the 2006 season-opener at Daytona, but the Yamaha and Kawasaki factory teams have planned another two-day test next week at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.
