Yoshimura Suzuki’s Mat Mladin completed a perfect sweep of all the AMA Superbike pole positions of 2005 with a lap-record-breaking 1:21.685 on his Dunlop-equipped GSX-R1000 during final qualifying Saturday morning at Road Atlanta. The pole position was Mladin’s 10th straight of the season, a new record, and the 47th of his career, the most all-time. “It was a really good lap. We hit everything. A 1:21.6 is a pretty fast lap around here on race tires,” said Mladin, adding that he did the lap on the same tire he planned to race on. Mladin’s teammate and main Championship challenger Ben Spies qualified second with his Friday time of 1:23.161. Spies said he had a mid-1:22 going on a softer tire but messed up in the turn 10 chicane and pulled in. He said he is working to fix a problem that causes the front end of his GSX-R1000 to fade five to six laps into races. Third-fastest qualifier was the third Yoshimura Suzuki rider Aaron Yates with a 1:23.242 on his GSX-R1000. Yates rode on used tires and worked mainly on his race set-up during the Saturday morning session and said he can run comfortably in the mid-1:23s. Parts Unlimited Ducati Austin’s Neil Hodgson further refined the new set-up on his 999 and shaved 0.5-second off his Friday qualifying effort with a 1:23.297, fourth on the front row of the grid. Hodgson’s effort bumped American Honda’s Jake Zemke to the second row. Zemke turned a fifth-fastest 1:23.302 on his CBR1000RR. Zemke’s teammate Miguel Duhamel could not go faster than he did Friday and ended up sixth with a 1:23.337. Hodgson’s teammate Eric Bostrom chopped over a second from his time Friday, turning a 1:23.886, which was good enough for seventh on the grid. Earning the final spot on the second row for this weekend’s Suzuki Superbike Showdown at Road Atlanta was Josh Hayes, who turned an eighth-fastest 1:24.349 on his Attack Kawasaki ZX-10R. Kurtis Roberts reverted back to previous generation Ohlins forks instead of the gas charged forks he has been using and had his most competitive qualifying run of the season, ninth with a 1:24.537 on his Erion Honda CBR1000RR. Marty Craggill was 10th-quickest with a 1:24.662 on his Mat Mladin Motorsports Suzuki GSX-R1000. Final AMA Superbike Qualifying Results: 1. Mat Mladin, Suzuki, 1:21.685 2.
