McDonough Wins OMRRA Formula Ultra Races, Sets Lap Record At Portland International Raceway

OMRRA entered the second half of the season with sizzling hot temps July 27 at Portland International Raceway. The chase for the overall championship has been largely fought between two young guns, Andy DiBrino and Motorcycle Superstore’s Devon McDonough. In the previous round, as the Pirelli laced McDonough flirted with the lap record while claiming wins in Formula Ultra, DiBrino was struck with mechanical woes. The pattern would continue in Round 4, as McDonough swept the weekend with a pair of wins in Formula Ultra, and further stamped his authority by setting a new motorcycle lap record of 1:06.093 on his way to winning Open Superbike to close the weekend. Meanwhile, DiBrino suffered a mechanical DNF in Saturday’s Formula Ultra race, but returned to achieve a fourth place in Sunday’s Formula Ultra race on a back-up bike. Californian veteran Lenny Hale, who has served as a mentor to young McDonough, finished as runner-up in both Formula Ultra races, which saw the top four riders set a blistering pace in the 1:06 range. By the time the dust had settled, McDonough had claimed a formidable 42 point lead in the OMRRA Overall Championship with DiBrino slid to third place behind the consistent Sam Verderico. An exuberant McDonough gave his thoughts after breaking the lap record, ”It was a tough start to the weekend but the KFG / GP Suspension team just kept at it and gave me a great bike to ride!”

In the EDR Performance Clubman Championship, Andy DiBrino was able to take grab a fistful of points by sweeping the 600 Supersport and 600 Superbike classes. McDonough pressured DiBrino heavily to finish second in the 600 Supersport race, but suffered misfortune of his own by scoring a DNS in the 600 Superbike race. The 750 classes were nearly a repeat of 600 action, except for the addition of Sam Verderico on his GSX-R750 to take on the Yamaha R6’s of DiBrino and McDonough. DiBrino came out on top in 750 Supersport, after a tight battle that saw Verderico finish runner-up followed by McDonough. In 750 Superbike, Verderico emerged as the victor despite pressure from DiBrino, while McDonough was unable to match their pace on his way to a third place finish.

Despite a string of bad luck in Formula Ultra, DiBrino vaults himself back to the lead in the OMRRA Clubman Championship by a single point over Suzuki SV650 racer Peter Khan who had stiff competition in the Middleweight races over the weekend. In Middleweight Supersport, Michael Caravatta took the decisive win after capturing the lead on the second lap. Carravatta never looked back with Peter Kahn and Josh Melanson trailing in 2nd and 3rd place respectively. The GP Twins race showcased the return of Matt O’Rourke from an early season injury. O’Rourked shot out to the lead and held off a last lap attack from Ronnie Saner with local stalwart Bennie Goodson rounding out the podium. Sunday started off with a barnstormer of the Middleweight GP race. A five bike freight train was locked fender to subframe in a hammer and tongs 24 lap sprint race. Kahn came out on top having taken the lead on the last lap after stalking the pack much of the race. Joshua Melanson claimed second place after Derrick Edwards drifted wide in turn 3. In 450 Superbike, Michael Caravatta charged to the lead with Kahn getting the better of Patrick Leyshock in the opening laps and holding off a late race charge. Middleweight Superbike rounded out the category with Caravatta taking the top spot and Leyshock and Kahn switching places on the podium. In the Middleweight Sportsman race (aka Lightweight Classic Superbike) Derek Stotz took his first first with a commanding lead followed by veteran Brad Pinkstaff and Mike Gray.

The Langlitz Leathers Vintage Championship offered great opportunities to local racers unable to travel this weekend. Entries were light due to a vintage showcase event in region over the weekend. This allowed locals to accumulate valuable championship points. Ryan Shanahan took full advantage of the opportunity and climbed to the top of the Lightweight Vintage championship with a pair of wins. Damon Velocitas and Andy Hudock rounded out the podium for the class. Jared Kenyon picked up the pace in Middleweight Vintage, keeping his Rickman-framed Montesa 250 ahead of Doug Willett’s Yamaha SR500. Kenyon continues to develop his machine and his lap times are showing remarkable results. When OMRRA hosts our yearly vintage event on August 16-17 look for Kenyon to dice it up at the front. OMRRA’s Vintage Day is a double-points weekend for vintage racers. Current championship leader Mica Grohn has the potential to unseat Eirik Neilsen for the #1 spot in Middleweight Vintage and with less than five points behind Shanahan take over the top of the Lightweight Vintage leader board. August’s vintage event is a celebration of yesteryear’s machinery. Expect bigger grids with racers from far and wide, LeMans-style starts and heated competition. Be sure to join us, August 16-17 at Portland International Raceway.

The Oregon Motorcycle Road Racing Association (OMRRA) developed the two-race per weekend Formula Ultra Championship, the ‘your best two classes’ Clubman Championship and the two-race per day, Olympic-scored Vintage Championship, promoting safe, competitive road racing in all categories. OMRRA, incorporated in 1972 as a non-profit, volunteer run organization, has members ranging in age from 12 to over 70, racing motorcycles of many brands, sizes and ages. OMRRA operates at Portland International Raceway, a city park and world class track. For more information, visit www.omrra.com and join us at www.omrra.com
