Geoff May broke the lap record at Homestead-Miami Speedway during the Unlimited Grand Prix race at the 2004-season-opening CCS Florida event Sunday. May ran his fastest lap heading for the white flag, his time of 1:26.56 almost a second faster than the record set by Marco Martinez last December. And with a maneuver reminiscent of teammate Michael Barnes, May rode his Prieto Racing prepared GSX-R1000 across the finish line in a stand-up wheelie with a lap time of 1:27.99. Later, he explained that he “had to show everybody that I know how to do a wheelie.”

May only raced twice, starting and ending the day with victories. In both the GTO and Unlimited Grand Prix classes, he was gridded mid-pack and had to maneuver through traffic to take the lead. And, once he got to the front, he continued to pick up the pace and open the gap on the rest of the field. On the podium May commented on breaking the track record stating, “I think I could have gone faster, actually.” He explained that he “got kind of tired sitting around all day,” in between his two events, which were the first and last races of the day. “I didn’t feel as great as I did this morning. So, I’m impressed that I was able to do that.”
