CCS Florida – Homestead-Miami Speedway

June 21-22, 2014

CCS Florida’s last two races of the day were rescheduled to the next event at Homestead-Miami Speedway, July 26-27th, due to a late afternoon thunderstorm that produced local lightning and flooded track conditions. With temperatures reaching a record high of 93 degrees, and humidity levels reaching 100%, the dry morning track conditions were destined to give way to afternoon storms. Most of the day’s events were in the books when the skies finally opened up and a heavy afternoon downpour started during race 18 (of 20). The red flag was shown at the half-way mark when lightning began striking in the area, and the track’s surface immediately began to puddle and eventually flood. After an extended delay, racers were consulted by CCS officials, and all voted to declare that race final. The remaining two races on the schedule, Middleweight Grand Prix and Expert Unlimited Grand Prix, will be run at the July event, scoring double points for all entrants in the cancelled classes.

Prior to the downpour, Expert Charlie Mavros had dominated the lightweight classes winning four of his races after taking early leads and battling with some tough competition. His first win in the GT Lights class set the standard for the day with the leaders grouped together tightly and swapping positions at almost every lap in the battle for second. Mavros held his advantage throughout the nine lap event, on his Moto Corse Performance Ducati Paul Smart 1000. After much position swapping, Moto Corse Performance’s Carl Cohen finished second, with Lucas Silva rounding off the top three.

Mavros was back out front again, in the rest of his classes, mounted on Bridgestone Battlax tires and taking early leads to victory. He also won the Ultralight Superbike race on his Ducati 800SS, the Lightweight Superbike race on his Bimota DB5, and the Lightweight Supersport class on his Ducati 1000SS, all Moto Corse Performance prepped.

Bruno Silva was the standout rider in the Unlimited classes with his Pirelli Tire mounted

Kawasaki ZX-10R. He won the first race of the day with an early lead and gap on the rest of the field. Armando Ferrer worked his way through traffic to take second place, with Carlos Felipe Ortiz finishing third. Silva was out front again after taking the holeshot in the Unlimited Supersport race and held his advantage to the checkered flag. Ortiz finished second, with Camilo Correa in third. Silva was untouchable again, in Unlimited Superbike, finishing first, with Rodolfo Ramirez second, and Ortiz in third.

Amateur Ryan Cabrera won the most races of the day, taking home six first place finishes on the Dunlop tires mounted West Side Performance Suzuki GSX-R600. Cabrera won the Amateur GTO, GTU, Unlimited Supersport, Middleweight Supersport, Heavyweight Supersport, and Heavyweight Superbike classes.

Championship Cup Series Florida region races are next scheduled for July 26-27th, at Homestead-Miami Speedway with a revised schedule to include the two missed classes from the rained out event.
