Racing Crew Chief’s Legacy Opens Door for Student’s Career in the Motorcycle Industry PHOENIX, (March 19, 2009) UTI Foundation announced today that Morgan Donahue, a Motorcycle Mechanics Institute (MMI) student, is the recipient of the Merlyn Plumlee Memorial Scholarship. Donahue is from Phoenix, Ariz., and will continue legendary crew chief Merlyn Plumlee’s passion for motorcycles and racing by using the Plumlee scholarship to pursue a technical career at MMI’s Phoenix campus. In addition to the scholarship, Donahue will receive an internship on a motorcycle racing team. The Merlyn Plumlee Memorial Scholarship was established by family, friends and the motorcycle industry to give deserving students the ability to study at MMI and carry on Plumlee’s philosophy of generosity, fairness and love for the sport of motorcycle racing. Plumlee, 55, who passed away in October, 2007, was well-known as one of the top crew chiefs in the United States, representing some of the most prominent racers in the history of the sport. Plumlee is survived by his wife Marta, who led the creation of the scholarship program as a tribute to her husband, and now serves on the selection committee and arranges a motorcycle internship for the winner. “Merlyn offered his expertise and support to racers and technicians at all levels, including privateers and those on competing teams. He treated everyone with respect and was a mentor to all, because he wanted everyone to be a winner, said Marta Plumlee. “Merlyn’s scholarships will help support the next generation of top motorcycle technicians and pave the way for men and women of similar character and outlook to thrive in the sport that he loved so much.” “Merlyn Plumlee was a remarkable man dedicated to helping others,” said Veronica Meury, vice-president and executive director of UTI Foundation. “Representatives of the Universal Technical Institute Foundation are thrilled to announce the newest scholarship winner and to be associated with Marta and the Merlyn Plumlee Memorial Scholarship program. Programs like this one will help deserving students follow their motorcycle dream.” New and existing MMI students, meeting all admissions criteria, were invited to submit an application and a short essay describing how they share Plumlee’s passion for the motorcycle industry as well as how the scholarship would enable them to complete their education. The $3,000 grant-in-aid scholarship money is applied to the student’s tuition, prorated over the entire term of the student’s education program. “Motorcycles have always been a big part of my life, and Mr. Plumlee’s scholarship will be a great opportunity to help me achieve my goals,” said Donahue. “Merlyn Plumlee is an inspiration to anyone who loves what they do and is driven to fulfill their dreams. I hope I can face life and its struggles with as much grace as Mr. Plumlee.” Complete details on the criteria, process and rules for the Merlyn Plumlee Memorial Scholarship can be found by visiting www.utifoundation.net or go to the UTI Foundation link on the UTI corporation site www.uti.edu.
