Melka Wins Most, Lampe Takes the Shootout

Jeff Lampe won the CCS Unlimited Grand Prix race on his Kissimmee Motorsports Kawasaki ZX-10R after a third place start behind Bruno Silva’s Prieto Performance Kawasaki ZX-10R and Sean Dwyer’s Westside Performance/KWS Motorsports Suzuki GSX-R1000 May 5 at Homestead-Miami Speedway, in Homestead, Florida.

Lampe maneuvered his way to second place and held his position until after the halfway mark, when a mishap with his kill switch pushed him into high gear and past the leader with just two laps to go. Lampe opened a small gap on second place to take the victory in the last laps of the race. Dwyer, Silva, Nico Ferreira, and Gustavo Sanchez rounded off the top five.

“I got a good start and was sitting right behind Bruno and I felt comfortable,” said Lampe. “And, coming down the back straight, I made a stupid move. I reached down to turn my fan switch on because my bike was running a little hot, and when I did, my arm hit the kill switch and shut [the bike] off. So, I had to turn it back on. Then I was kind of in panic mode, because I went from going with a smile saying, ’The straight could be mine,’ to ‘Oh, this is going to be a long one.’ So, I just put my head down and rode hard and caught up to Sean and Silva in Turn Eight. Sean came out of the corner and all he had to do was a big wheelie coming out, and I tell you he hung on to it and was doing everything to go forward but it gave me that little bit to get the run on and get past him.

“Hats off to our crew,” Lampe exclaimed. “We come here to race the Shootout. It makes us work hard all day long for this race. And that’s what I was doing. I was trying to make the bike better and better and better. Because any time we win a race earlier in the day and we think our stuff’s good enough for the shootout, we’re always behind the eight ball. We kept working hard. We found some setup changes we thought would work in the Shootout. And, it did. So, my hat’s off to them. All I do is ride the bike.”

He further explained, “This weekend’s been tough for our Kissimmee Motorsports Team. Normally we have pretty nice weekends with no troubles. But, Felipe MacLean had some motor problems, then a weird crash. This morning I had some engine problems. And we had to do some switches. My crew, Jesse McDonald, Steve, the guys over here, Dave Weaver helped a lot this weekend and the guys from K-Tech. John with CTR really got this bike working. I’ve got to really say thanks to these guys because without these guys it wouldn’t be possible to get out there.” He also thanked Dunlop Tires, Racing Connection, CTR, Yntegra Group, and CCS.

On the podium, Dwyer stated, “Once I cleared him, I tried to put my head down, but made up a little bit of time. It was just too late. In the last lap, Lampe isn’t going to make a big mistake with a lead like that. Congrats to these guys! They both rode awesome. Jeff is killing it. And, Bruno’s got a shootout win coming.”

Earlier in the day, Dwyer won the Unlimited Supersport and Unlimited Superbike races. Silva started the day by winning GTO race, and later crashed, injuring his shoulder. After the Shootout, he stated, “It was an amazing battle. I’m really happy to put this bike on the podium because it was hard. I want to thank, first of all, God, because my brother Fernando is OK. He crashed really hard earlier. Thanks to Prieto Performance for all the support. They put the bike together really quickly. Thanks to Eric Gray of GMD Computrack Fort Lauderdale, because he always does the best set up for me. Thanks to my family for all the support. I’m really happy!”

Greg Melka was the winningest Expert of the weekend with a grand total of five first-place finishes. Melka rode his Pro Flow Tech Yamaha YZF-R6 to victory in the GTU, Middleweight Supersport, Middleweight Superbike, Heavyweight Superbike, and Middleweight Grand Prix. He also finished second in Heavyweight Supersport.

Amateur Clint Russell was the winningest racer of the day again with a grand total of eight first-place finishes on his Champion Motorcycles-prepped Suzuki GSX-R600 and SV650. Russell won the Amateur GT Lights, Ultralight Superbike, Middleweight Supersport, Lightweight Grand Prix, Heavyweight Supersport, Lightweight Superbike, Lightweight Supersport, and Middleweight Grand Prix. He also finished second in the GTU, Middleweight Superbike, and Lightweight Supersport classes.

The next round of CCS Florida races is scheduled for May 26-27th in Jupiter, Florida.
