Attack Kawasaki’s Josh Hayes surprised many by leading all riders in the first official AMA Superbike practice session Friday at the 3.0-mile, 10-turn Brainerd International Raceway.

Riding his Kawasaki ZX-10R Superbike, Hayes turned a time of 1:36.810, which is substantially off Mat Mladin’s lap record of 1:35.320 but was 0.3-second faster than Mladin’s time of 1:37.159 in the same session.

“I don’t know,” Hayes sheepishly said, when asked what he thought about leading an AMA Superbike time sheet for the first time. “It’s such a long day and weekend. We’ll just see how the rest of the day and qualifying goes, but I hope we can keep things going well.”

According to Attack Kawasaki team owner/Crew Chief Richard Stanboli, Hayes’ bike has been fitted with a new set of Ohlins forks – the works, pressurized forks from Eric Bostrom’s 2003 Kawasaki Superbike.

“Everyone said they felt different, but we just bolted them on and they felt good,” said Hayes of the forks.
