The Superstock racing action began late Saturday afternoon when Yates qualified in fifth position on the second row after posting a best lap time of 1:37.557. He fell during the morning’s practice and tweaked the shoulder he’d injured during testing last February. He said: “I hurt my shoulder when I fell this morning and I just can’t push as hard as I need to.” In Sunday afternoon’s 17-lap race, however, Yates got a good start and was out front in third position. He stayed put for several laps before taking over second place and was riding aggressively on his Yoshimura Suzuki GSX-R1000 when a red flag was thrown with eight laps completed. Because of anticipated weather, the AMA called the race at that point. “You always want to win the race,” said Yates afterwards. “But it was a good race. I got hung up for a while in third place and then I was able to get by and get into second. I tried to chase after the leader but he was too far out there when we got the red flag. Even though I’d rather get the win, second is good for the points in the championship.” Superstock Top 10 Finishers: 1. Jamie Hacking (Yamaha) 2. Aaron Yates (Yoshimura Suzuki) 3. Eric Bostrom (Ducati) 4. Geoff May (M4 EMGO Suzuki) 5. Jake Holden (Jordan Suzuki) 6. Marty Craggill (Hotbodies Racing Mat Mladin Motorsports Suzuki) 7 Steve Rapp (Jordan Suzuki) 8. Josh Hayes (Honda) 9. Matt Lynn (Suzuki) 10. Aaron Gobert (Honda) More, from a press release issued by Pirelli: During Friday’s official Formula Xtreme practice at the AMA Superbike event at Infineon Raceway, M4 EMGO Suzuki’s Michael Barnes set the fastest lap overall on his Suzuki GSX-R600, ripping off a time 1:40.177 with Pirelli’s Super Corsa Pros. In Saturday’s qualifying Barnes upped his pace to set a time of 1:39.067, nabbing a front-row seat with the third quickest time. In the race Barnes ran a clean third for a few laps until finding himself in a battle for that position. At the end Barnes was credited with a hard-fought fifth. In Supersport, Geoff May rode his M4 EMGO Suzuki GSX-R600 to the third fastest time in opening practice on Friday, setting the fastest time for a privateer. In Saturday’s Supersport practice Barnes took over the third fastest time with May claiming the fourth fastest time, both within just tenths of the leading time. In qualifying Barnes and May claimed two spots on the front row with their Pirelli Super Corsa Pros, qualifying third and fourth. Barnes nailed the holeshot in the race’s start and led the field into turn two, where his bike suffered a mechanical. May meanwhile was running third when the race was red fagged on the third lap and unable to be restarted due to rain. The race was called a non-event: no winner, no points, didn’t happen. Geoff May moved up to take the fourth fastest time in Superstock qualifying after setting fifth fastest time in the class’s Saturday practice with a set of Pirelli Diablo Superbike tires mounted on his Suzuki GSX-R1000 (Superstock practice on Friday was rained out.). In the race May was in contention for a podium finish when the race was red flagged because of another rider’s blown engine. The race was not restarted because of threatening rain and May was credited with fourth with eight laps given as the official race length. During the final two laps of the Superstock race the M4 EMGO Suzuki crew recorded May as advancing a second a lap on the race leader. The results from Infineon put May fourth in Superstock points, just 5 points behind third and 29 points behind first with seven events remaining. In Supersport May is still third in points due to none being scored at the Infineon event. May has 79 points and is one point away from second place in the Supersport championship.
