Tomlinson Wins Four Again At NOLA with CMRA

Garet Tomlinson was on fire despite sketchy track conditions and cold weather riding his Pirelli-shod, GMAN Racing-prepped, Yamaha YZF-R6 to four wins again during the Central Motorcycle Roadracing Association’s (CMRA) second round of Bridgestone/CMRA Championship sprints this past Sunday, March 12, on the 16-turn, 2.75 mile long course at NOLA Motorsports Park, Avondale, Louisiana.

A storm that rolled in at 4 am dumped massive amounts of water on the tracks, and the chilly 50 degree temperatures made for completely different conditions than Saturday’s races. A weather delay while the CMRA and NOLA track personnel cleared as much water as they could off the track kept the race day from starting until almost noon. The day’s races were shortened, and several races were combined to fit all 23 scheduled races into the day.

Tomlinson went to work, outriding his fellow competitors for five podiums total, taking the wins in P1 Racing/Metric Garage / CVC – Formula 1 Expert, 212Decals.com – A Superbike Expert, B Superbike Expert, C Superbike Expert, and second in South Central Race Center – C Superstock Expert, with a fastest lap of 1:48.099 on Lap 4 of Race 17/13 – C Superbike Expert.

The other Sunday standout was Dewayne Davis, representing the Formula 50s, who rode his Monkey Moto NTXSBKS Yamaha YZF-R1 and Suzuki GSX-R1000 to five podiums as well, with the wins in: RaceworX – A Superstock Expert, Georgetown Diesel & Complete Automotive – Formula 40 Heavyweight Expert, Modern Classic, and third in P1 Racing/Metric Garage / CVC – Formula 1 Expert, and 212Decals.com – A Superbike Expert with a fastest of lap of 1:49.760 on Lap 3 of Race 18/14 – Formula 40 Heavyweight Expert.

Daniel Adams was out front for the Lightweights, coming back from a rough morning of mechanicals to take the wins in Century Trucks and Vans – Formula 2 Expert, D Superbike Expert, and Formula 40 Lightweight Expert with his Suzuki SV650, running a fastest lap of 1:54.673 on lap 4 of Race16/12, Formula 40 Lightweight Expert.

Morning qualifying for Sunday’s headline race, P1 Racing – Formula 1 Expert was cancelled due to the poor conditions, and was gridded on points, with Garet Tomlinson in pole position on his Yamaha YZF-R6, Nick Doolan next to him, also on a Yamaha YZF-R6, and Craig Montgomery aboard his Kawasaki ZX-10R rounding out the front row. The race was also shortened to 5 laps total due to the late morning start time.

The start lights went out, and the 19-bike grid surged forward. The track was starting to dry, but now had green areas as well as damp areas and the conditions were intermediate at best. As the field spread out going into Turn 3, it was very evident that it was like racing on a giant slip and slide. A couple of bikes went down and slid away, with the riders unhurt, as the pack sorted out the first lap. Rounding the carousel turn and crossing the river running over it onto the front straight, Tomlinson had edged the lead from Doolan and Davis who were battling fiercely for second. Montgomery was in the mix with Joseph Caruso on his BMW S1000RR and Aaron Graham on a Yamaha YZF-R6, while Yamaha YZF-R6 riders Jordan Pence, Kyle Coles, and Kyle Fox wrestled each other for dominance. Doug Frenchak was sliding around on his Yamaha YZF-R1 holding off Suzuki GSX-R1000 mounted David Felio for the top ten.

On Lap 2, another bike went down and slid away in Turn 3 with the rider unhurt, as the conditions were proving to be an obstacle in this race. Tomlinson held his lead and started to extend it, navigating standing puddles and running water. As Lap 3 completed, Tomlinson was out in front with a 4.973 second lead with Doolan just ahead of Davis for second when a red flag was brought out from a rider going down in the water that was going across the carousel just before the front straight. Because the race had passed the halfway point, it was called, and the results from the previous lap were the standings, with Tomlinson taking the win and turning the fastest lap of the race on lap 2 with a 1:51.884. Doolan was second, with Davis taking third, Graham, Montgomery, and Caruso took fourth, fifth and sixth. Pence, Coles, and Fox were seventh, eighth, and ninth, with Frenchak rounding out the top ten. Tomlinson also grabbed the P1 Racing purse for being the first 600 across the line.

A quick break after the Formula 1 race saw quick tire changes, as the steady wind continued to dry out the track as conditions improved slightly from intermediate to green with some standing water. Lap times started to pick up, and by the last five races of the day were almost as fast as good conditions. All 23 races were completed by 5 pm thanks to the hard work and hustling of the CMRA staff.

Top Novice went to Kasey Lewis, who took wins with his Yamaha YZF-R6, in Georgetown Diesel & Complete Automotive – Formula 1 Novice, A Superstock Novice, Moto Liberty – C Superstock Novice, and third in Monkey Moto NTXSBKS – A Superbike Novice, turning a fastest lap of 1:56.575 on Lap 3 of Race 15/11, the A Superbike race while racing with a fractured ankle.

The Jennifer Millsap “Get it Girl” $100 award, sponsored by A. C. Horn, went to Shandra Crawford for her combined finishes aboard her Triumph Daytona 675R in Monkey Moto NTXSBKS – Formula 1 Ladies, Heavyweight Twins Expert, Formula 40 Middleweight Expert, and Ultra LW GP Endurance.
