AMA Sanctioned ASRA Championship Sprint Series Presented by Pirelli Tire

Millville, NJ – The second round of AMA sanctioned ASRA Championship Series presented by Pirelli Tire rolled into New Jersey Motorsports Park and it didn’t take long for the action to heat up the Thunderbolt Circuit. Joining up with the Championship Cup Series and the AMA sanctioned United States Grand Prix Riders Union, the event garnered 715 entries with 169 riders, making every race as exciting to watch as it was to participate in. For years it was former and current ASRA Champions like Mark Miller Jr, Tim Bemisderfer and Ray Hofman who dominated the events at NJMP but this was not the case for 2014 as a mix of “Young Guns”, ASRA veterans and AMA Pro riders, who are trying to keep their skills sharp, descended on the event giving the racers and fans a taste of what the series is all about.
The opening race of the day was ASRA ThunderBike and it was the “Young Gun” Anthony Mazziotto III who got the crowd’s attention with a dominating win over series regulars David Hanig and Bart DeFrancesco at the end of the 16 mile sprint. Mazziotto, aboard the Mazziotto Racing Suzuki SV650, took the hole shot and never looked back as he finished a comfortable 11.541 seconds clear of Hanig on the Raw Speed Bimota who finished second. Filling out the final podium position was DeFrancesco astride the DC Paint Works Suzuki SV650.
Next to challenge the course at NJMP were the ASRA SuperStock machines and a very talented field of riders. Predominately a liter-bike class, SuperStock also allows SportBikes to step up and try their luck against the bigger bikes and Dane Westby took the challenge. At the green flag, the power of the Farrell Performance Kawasaki ZX10 and ability of its rider Jason Farrell were apparent as he took the hole shot and appeared to be well in command of the race. Dane Westby on the Westby Racing R6 had other ideas and latched on to the back of the big Kawasaki and never let Farrell get away. The next rider in the mix was the 2012 ASRA SuperStock Champion Tim Bemisderfer aboard his Vesrah Suzuki GSXR 1000, who spent all 8 laps working on Westby trying to find a way by to put the heat on Farrell. After an amazing battle over the entire race distance, Farrell was able to bring home the win just .096 seconds over Bemisderfer who was able to edge out Westby a mere .090 for second position. Farrell, who originally came to the event to tune and crew chief for another rider, leaves with a win and an 8 point lead in the 2014 ASRA SuperStock Championship.
From the start of the ASRA SportBike race it was clear that Dane Westby was not happy with his third place in SuperStock and he took it out on the rest of the SportBike field. Fresh from his win in SuperStock, Jason Farrell jumped on his Kawasaki ZX6 and took the holeshot but his lead was short-lived. By the time the leaders came around to finish the first lap, Westby on his Yamalube sponsored R6 had moved to the point and went to work on getting away from Farrell. As the laps passed, Westby pulled away and Farrell found himself under pressure from Corey Alexander on the Celtic Racing Suzuki GSXR600 and the ensuing battle carried itself to the final flag. At the checkered flag, it was Westby with the win by 9.703 seconds over Alexander followed by Farrell just .075 seconds back in third place.
