Pirelli equipped riders take victory at Pikes Peak, with 3 of 4 top finishes in Motorcycle Open class

On Pirelli DIABLO™ Superbike tires, Jeremy Toye takes 1st place on his Kawasaki; Ducati riders Don Canet and Micky Dymond place 3rd and 4th

Pikes Peak (CO), July 1 2014 – Pirelli riders and teams have claimed victory over the mountain in the motorcycle classes at the 92nd Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, utilizing the grip and technology of DIABLO™ Superbike tires. The victory marks the 3rd year in a row where Pirelli equipped riders have won the Motorcycle class.

For team Kawasaki, Jeremy Toye took 1st place in the open class (motorcycle) on his Kawasaki Ninja ZX-10R, equipped with Pirelli DIABLO ™ Superbike slicks front and rear – posting a blistering 9:58.687 time, with an average speed of 72.158mph up the 12.42 mile course. More incredible still, this was Toye and Kawasaki’s first attempt at the race. Toye and his Kawasaki team faced considerable challenges; including overcoming a fall during qualifying that required a rebuild of the winning bike only the morning before the race. Choosing to use the DIABLO™ Superbike slick front and rear, they charged up the mountain taking the win in class and setting the quickest motorcycle time on 3 of the 4 segments – and finishing ahead of all but 6 competitors overall, 4-wheel competitors included!

For Team Spider Grips Ducati, Don Canet took 3rd place with a 10:10.1 at 70.81mph, and teammate Micky Dymond close behind in 4th with a 10.11.3 at 70.81mph. Riding a matching pair of 2014 Ducati Multistrada 1200 S, the team chose to use Pirelli DIABLO™ Superbike wet (intermediate) front and Superbike slick rear, as the wet front would assist in keeping heat in the tire, and increasing mechanical grip and feel on the cold pavement and as temperatures plunged during the ascent to the summit.

“We’re thrilled with the result. After a successful qualifying, taking 3 of the 4 top spots and the victory in this race is a testament to our tires and the teams. The best part is that the quality, high performance tires used by the competitors are available to the public, staying true to our motto that ‘we race what we sell, we sell what we race’,” commented Jeff Johnston, North American Road Racing Manager.
